Sallows Depiction of
an Agricultural Era:
Reuben *lows (1855-1937) created in-
valuable records with his photographs of a
way of life and times. We are very fortunate
that many of his photos were taken in this
immediate area - Goderich, Colborne And
Stanley Townships.
His photo are some of the very first taken
of people doing ordinary, everyday tasks
such as milking, haying and even shaving.
Although he also took a number of area

school photos and other posed pictures, and
did travel Mr afield (even to the Yukon)
once he had established his reputation.
Onemust remember that a photographer
in those days did not carry a small pocket
camera which made it easy to records one's
"precious' moments" (as the adver-
tisements suggest). Sallows worked with a
heavy box style camera, glass -plate
negatives (as large as 6 x 8 inches), and a
tripod - which would be essential since his
exposure time could be in the minutes
rather than seconds!
