Goderich Township borders on the shores
of Lake Huron and is bounded by the
Maitland and Bayfield Rivers.
A predominantly agrarian community, it
is interesting to note that in W.H. Smith's
etter of 1846, the population of the
ns
nship was 1,673. He noted that the
ship contained 56,066 acres, 35,118 of
which was leased or sold and of that over
5,000 acres was under cultivation.
In 1846 the township contained one grist
and two sawmills, fulling mill and carding
machine. There was a tavern located on the
Bayfield Road four miles south of Goderich.

share of industry, is mainly a farming MU-
munity. One ‘of *teen townshipS ui the
county of Huron, it has a population of 2,431.
Goderich Township is bounded by water
on three sides; Lake Huroxi to the west, the
Maitland River to the north and the Bayfield
River to the south. To the east it borders on
Hullett Township.
The township offices and community cen-
tre are located in Holmesville, its sole
village which has a population exceeding
100. But the village has grown to become the
centre of activity for the township.
Within the past few years a new township
community centre was constructed and new
playground and baseball facilities were
also added to the area. So Holmesville, with
its school, community centre, township of-
fices, ball park and general store is truly the
centre of activity for Goderich Township
and it is the reason the village was chosen as
the site for the week's activities.
But the township touches on major cen-
tres including the town of Goderich to the
north, Bayfield to the south and the town of
Clinton to the southeast.
