Teachers and students return to
Holmesville School for reunion
and exhibits from July 1.9-31
School maybe out for,the summer, but the
Holmesville school will see the return of
students andteachers, both past and pre-
sent, to a special sesquicentennial reunion.
The reunion will take place from July 19 to
July 21.
Alison Lobb, a member of the committee
organizing the reunions says the success of
a school exhibit, held during Candada's
centennial year, 1967, had a lot to do with a
similar event being included in this year's
festivities.
"There had been such a fantastic display
in 1967. people just raved about it! The peo-
ple in this area have such a wealth of old
(school -related) items that they're very pro-
ud of them,” says Lobb. She says there was
no way the 1-5-0 committee was going to let
such an excellent resource go unused during
the current celebrations.
The committee which has been responsi-
ble for arranging the reunion and display
consists of: Chairperson Barb Betties,
Helen Dykstra and Alison Lobb. Much has
been accomplished since their first meeting
on January 7, 1985.
During the early years of education in
Goderich Township, the township was divid-
ed into 11 school sections each section had
its own schoolhouse and teacher. Tire have
been 149 invitations mailed to former
teachers, music, teachers and- inspectors. In
addition, 18 invitations have been hand-
deli.vered to present day teachers at the
Holmesville School.
The teacher's reunion will take place on
Saturday, July 20, beginning after the 1-5-0
parade (at approximately 2 p.m). Teachers
will register at the door and will have an op-
portunity to visit and reminisce in the
auditorium. Lists of the names of all the
teachers of each school section will be on
view. A photographers will be on hand to
take group photos and these polaroid pic-

Lobb said the committee is hoping return-
ing teachers will bring old pictures and
memorabila with them to share with others
at the reunion.
'The schoolwill also house numerous ex-
hibits in five classrooms and in the
auditorium. Each school section will be
represented, Betties has contacted cine per-
son from each section and they have become
responsible for recruiting helpers, choosing
themes and gathering articles.
Each school section will have a different
theme. For example, one will feature an old-
fashioned parlour; another, and old-
fashioned laundry; a third, a pioneer kit-
chen; and a fourth; a map of its school sec-
tion, showing the names of farm owners
then and now. Each display will consist of
furniture, clothing and other items donated
by current and former residents of the sec-
tion.
Two churches will also be featured – pre-
sent day Middleton Church and church of
the past, Ebenexer. The Ebenezer Church
organ, now owned by Murray Draper, of
Clinton, will be included along with the Bi-
ble, pulpit, chairs and rug.
Other Goderich Township 4H clubs and
the Women's Institute, along with exhibits
by two local artists and a doll collection
numbering 115. Dutch Canadian residents
will also have a display in the school, and on
Friday afternoon the senior citizens of the
township will demonstrate the art of
quilting.
The exhibits will be open to the public on
Friday, July 19, from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m.; on
Saturday July 20, from 2-9 p.n .; and on Sun-
day, July 21 from 3-5 p.m. A representative
will be on hand to explain each display. .
Current township residents and former -
residents alike should enjoy this fascinating
walk down memory lane.
