Land Speculation - In 1853 Christopher Sperling, to whom this letter Is addressed, and his
brother George, were buying land In Tuckersmith in anticipation of the railroad running
through. The land referred to In the letter was sold at a sheriff's sale after Col. Anthony
Van Egmond dled In jail In 1838 following William Lyon McKenzie's rebellion. Later Mr.
Sperling bought It from the letter writer, Lawrence Laurason. After the railway purchased
some of the Sperling land fora right of way, three lawyers bought more Sparling land and
had It surveyed into a town plot. It was registered In the name of Seaforth In 1855.

The men were reading, smoking or play-
ing cards, a few of the younger ones working
in the grounds. One wondered that more of
them were not enjoying the air on the fine,
wide verandahs which are attached to the
lower and second flats; but most of them
seemed to prefer being inside.
That such a retreat is necessary is
evidenced by the number of inmates. To
manage successfully an institution of their

kind requires talents of no mean order. The
performance of the duties attached to the
positions of manager and matron of such an
institution calls out all the resources of a
many sided nature and to fulfill those duties
well and satisfactorily reflects credit upon
both head and heart. That the duties are be-
ing so fulfilled seems evident to every
visitor, and when such a place is necessary,
it is a matter for congratulation that such a
capable couple as Manager and Mrs. Much
have been secured for the position.
Congratulations
