And there were purchases to be made and expenses to be met. Considerable discussion took place at the June 16, 1939 meeting about the purchase of a pole for drying the hose and a drum for rolling the hose on the fire engine. The yellowed pages of aline scribbler in- clude notes from meetings held from July 11, 1938 to February 10, 1941. The notebook was purchased at W. Scott & Co., dealers in general merchandise, grain and produce, Brucefield. Not only did it advertise Scott's store, but "McLaren's In- vincible Jelly." Highlights of the meeting notes include: The July 11, 1938 meeting was called to order by President Hugh Aikenhead at 10:10 p.m. Important business included a letter from Eastern Steel proposing a price of $100 for the construction of a new shed. "A loca- tion for such a building was discussed and it was decided to use either James ( ) lot or H.F. Berry's lot temporarily. Also see Mr. ( ) for the possibility of a perma- nent location." At the Oct. 19, 1938 meeting, "the treasurer gave a financial report with about $19 on hand." Of that, an account payable of $5.97 for lumber was approved for John B. Mustard. February 2, 1939 - "Moved by Alex Patter- son and seconded by J. McIntosh that we entertain the players and the firemen and their wives to a social evening in the IOOF Hall. The firemen and their wives to bring lunch. All expenses to be put up by the firemen and not taken from the funds." Finances were limited in those years. The Brucefield Fire Department has had the job of answering fire calls at all times. In November of 1970, they were called to Brucefield United Church. They had the assistance of the Seaforth and Clinton Departments but were unable to save the church.
