Revive!
Come alive Tuekersrnith '85
1985 is a year of celebration for
Tuckersmith residents. Since January they
have been remembering those who founded
the township 150 years ago, those who
helped it grow and those who are continuing
to keep the township flourishing.
Next weekend, June 29-30, will be the
grand finale. Quilters will find out who the
big winner of the quilt contest is and the men
will discover who has the best beard in the
Township of Tuckersmith. And everyone
will taken in a spectacular parade.
Kub Kar races, bed races, box races and a
craft show are just a few of the many
highlights planned for the weekend.
Events that have already taken place in-
cluded a curling bonspiel, Valentine Dance,
broomball tournament, fashion show, varie-
ty show, gold and silver elimination dance
and CKNX barn dance.
At the February 15 Valentine Dance, a
king, queen, prince and princess were
chosen to represent the township during the
sesquicentennial celebrations. Out of 77 con-
testants, Kerry Schmidt was chosen as
queen, David Townsend king, Charlene
Townsend princess and Kent Ratlrell
prince.
At the gold and silver elimination dance,
Warren Whitmore, of Clinton, won a two
ounce bar of gold with Carol Penhale,
Bayfield, and Jack Buston, Staffa, each win-
ning a one ounce bar of gold.
There were also 48 early bird winners of
one ounce of silver announced from January
to April.
This weekend promises to be the best two-
day event Tuckersmith has seen, so don't
miss it! (For complete details on the upcom-
ing celebrations, see the program in this
special edition. )
Villages and hamlets make up Tuckersmith
Together Vanastra, Brucefield, Kippen,
Egrnondville and Harpurhey make up the
Township of Tuckersmith. And together
they have made the township a productive
industry base as well as a good place to
raise a family.
Tuckersmith has its share of factories and
stores, parks and recreation areas, historic
and modern buildings. Each hamlet is uni-
que, contributing its own valuable resources
to the township.
Vanastra
Yesterday Vanastra was an air force
base, today it is the base of many industries,
restaurants, homes, a well equipped recrea-
tion centre as well as a public school and a
Conestoga College campus. The
Tuckersmith Municipal Office is also
located in Vanastra.
Brucefield
Half of Brucefield is situated in
Tuckersmith with the other hall belonging
to Stanley Township. The portion that is in
Tuckersmith is located on the east side of
Highway 4.
In 1863, Brucefield had a church, school,
two hotels, four stores, three shoe shops, a
wagon and carriage shop, three blacksmith
shops, three tailor shops, three carpenter

shops, a harness shop and a window blind
shop.
When the railroad was put through in 1875,
the village population grew to 200 and the
addition of saw mills, cheese factories and a
butcher shop came to town.
The number of stores has decreased over
the years, but Brucefield continues to have
the only fire department in Tuckersmith.
Because of Brucefield's double township oc-
cupancy, it serves both Tuckersmith and
Stanley Townships.
Kippen
Brucefield may extend into two
townships, but Kippen extends into three -
Tuckersmith, Stanley and Hay Townships.
Immigrants from Scotland settled in the
area during the 1830s. In 1871, Kippen had a
population of 40, which included 10 farmers,
two blacksmith shops, one wagon maker, a
school and a post office. By 1889, the popula-
tion had grown to 210 and saw and flour
mills were added as well as an agriculture
implement agent, two livestock dealers, a
carriage maker, a tailor, two general stores
and a hotel. In 1891 Kippen built its own
public hall.
