Clinton News-Record, 1985-6-19, Page 231 s P its CLTNTON NEWS- ECOi V, WEDNESDAY, JUNE 19, 1985—Page 34 Eagle Electronics is a division of Lowrance, a name well known when it comes to sonar equipment. As always, they're coming out with new and better gear and the latest entry is the best yet. A news release from Lowrance describes the Z-4000 fully. The ultimate sonar? No, but the new Eagle Electronics Z-4000 may be close. It's a graph without paper, and LCD (li- quid crystal display) without equal. Small and stylish, it is amazingly simple to operate. Closing the gap between its popular forerunners— the famous Mach 1 computer graph and a series of excellent flashers— the Z-4000 was designed to satisfy the fishing and navigational needs of any fisherman or boater. The folks at Eagle bill the unit as "fully automatic". With the touch of a single but- ton, turning the unit on, it will show bottom, fish, and structure. It will automatically select the proper depth range, set the needed sensitivity, and adopt the correct chart (moving video pic- ture) speed. Without further manipulation of the unit's computer, it will self -adjust as bottom dep- ths get deeper or shallower, and show other objects underwater such as brush, ledges and dropoffs. Naturally Speaking By Steve Cooke Close to perfection Another button brings a constant digital reading . of bottom depth, even in the roughest of waters. Highly accurate, the digital numbers will flash the last reading even if the boat is airborne. It will resume showing bottom depth when the boat re- enters the water. "Although it is more difficult to interpret and doesn't provide the infinite detail or fish size indication of our paper graphs, no com- petitive LCD can compare with the Z-4000," said Darrell Lowrance, president of Lowrance Electronics, Inc., Tulsa, OK., of which Eagle is a division. "With solid-state construction, a full com- puter and no moving parts, the Z-4000 is amazingly simple to operate," he said. "Some LCD units look similar to it," Lowrance added, "but they are crude from a technology standpoint, more difficult to operate, and offer a minimum of features." "For the serious angler, the Z-4000 pro- vides features never found previously in any sonar," he said. Simply by pressing the desired footage buttons, the unit will measure depths in one foot increments, a feature borrowed from the famous Lowrance X-16 graph. Thus, thousands of range settings are available, to as deep as 500 feet, while competitive units offer only five ranges at best. Boasting the finest video screen on the market, the unit offers 2688 pixels (dots) of information, compared to 1830 for the same size screen on top -line competitive models., This provides resolution of one -and -one half inches, at any depth. Other major features include: ...Measurement in feet, fathoms or meters, as' the operator desires, with in- dividually adjusted upper and lower limits. ...Two sets of alarms, one for signalling fish within any desired "window" display area below the boat, and the other for shallow and deep alarms, to aid in naviga- tion, warn of hazards or serve as an anchor watch. ...Versatile 32 -step sensitivity control, automatically or manually operated, pro- vides optimum fish -finding capability. ...Three levels of signal discrimination eliminates interference from other elec- trical devices, cavitation, or other sonar units. ...Completely waterproof. Units are filled with nitrogen gas to keep out all moisture and condensation. ...Backlighted display screen and keyboard for easy night use. ...Each unit is supplied with a high-speed 20 -degree cone angle transducer. ...A complete one-year warranty, backed by a guaranteed low-cost service policy. The Z-4000 is compact (measuring six in- ches square and only two inches deep) and mounts in a permanent gimbal bracket, ideal for installation on boat console, casting deck or bulkhead. It is also available in a portable unit (PZ - 40:00), which will operate on two six -volt lantern batteries, or a regular 12 -volt source. The portable comes complete with a 20 -degree, suction -cup transducer. WE RESERVE THE RIGHT TO LIMIT PURCHASES TO REASONABLE WEEKLY FAMILY REQUIREMENTS.
