I've attended a fair number of meetings
over the last couple of years. Some have
been long and drawn out and others have
been short and to the point.
I remember my first meeting in Clinton. I
wasn't feeling my best and couldn't wait to
crawl into bed, however, it was a Thursday
night and the recreation committee was
meeting. So much for crawling into bed.
I went to the meeting and, just because it
was a night that I was dying to get home, it
ran past midnight. That was about the only
recreation meeting that lasted that long and
got very little accomplished. In fact, over
the last few months, the committee
meetings have been very much to the point.
Recreation is a complex subject to deal
with. Contrary to What some think, it is not
simply organizing the arena schedule,
- although that is one of the important tasks. •
Clinton has organized their recreation
committee so that it runs efficiently and ef-
fectively. The addition of several new peo-
ple has brought refreshing enthusiasm and
new ideas to the various sub -committees.
Sub -committees are a great thing, at least
in my opinion. Instead of dragging every
detail up at the monthly meeting, a group of
three or four people discuss the subjects and
then bring their decision before the entire
committee for approval.

Important role
smaller conututtee„ within recreation, they
are the arena, pool -park program and arts
committee. Linda Reid, who is the vice-
chairman of the recreation conunittee, is
the chairman for the arena conunittee.
Other members in the arena conunittee are
Steve Gibbings and Dan Colquhoun.
Jim Hunter chairs the pool -park program
conunittee with Bonnie Jewitt and Bark
Crawford.
Interim chairman Gard Gerrits works
with Judy Stuart, Steve Oliver and Roy
Wheeler on the arts conunittee.
Overseeing all the sub -committees is Clin-
ton Recreation Corrunittee Chairman Ron
McKay, and, as recreation director, Kevin
Duguay is part of the committee.
What do all of these people do? I don't
think I can begin to list the many items they
take care of or the events that they
volunteer to help out at. (Some end
volunteering not only themselves but their
spouses as well. )
These people play an important role in
this community. They make decisions that
effect everyone from five -year-olds to 75 -
year -olds. The five -year-olds take part in
programs planned or sponsored by the
recreation conunittee and the older folks
help pay a portion of costs through their tax-
es.
The recreation committee seems to be
running smoothly. Co-operation and the
common goal of bettering recreation in Clin-
ton can only better the community.
