Clinton News-Record, 1985-6-12, Page 760th United Anniversarycelebrated • By Dora Shobbrook LONDESBORO - The 60th United An- niversary and communion was held Sunday and joining Reverend Dave Snihur in greeting worshippers was Gordon Shob- brook. Ushers were Ken Armstrong, Ron Gross, John Hoggart and Dennis Penfound. Rev. Snihur announced that June 23 is Promotion and Awards Sunday and on June 29 a pancake breakfast will be held. An ap- peal was made for the tornado victims. Jane and Connie, Hoggart occupied front centre seats. The messengers were in- troduced and presented with a small token by their leader In place of th anthem a duet of "Whisper- ing Hope" w s sung by Rev. Snihur and Harry Lear, ccompanied by Marsha Szusz while the offe g was received. The sermon was "A time to be proud," in- formation on t e church union. Assisting the minister with communion were Gordon Shobbrook and Nick Whyte. Serving bread were Harry Snell, Trudy Pollard, Jim Jameison, Clara Riley, and wine, Jack Tamblyn, Lorne Hunking, Bert Lyon and Bernice Norman. Ball Family Reunion On June 9, 105 descendants of the late John Ball and Sarah Palmer held a reunion at Ball's Grove in Hullett Township. Welcoming were Bill and Verna Gibbings, Garnet and Margaret Wright and Elgin Pen - found. Blessing was sung and all enjoyed pot luck dinner. President Garnet Wright welcomed all and a minute of silence was held in memory of past members. Minutes of last year's pic- Ilic and the treasurer's report were given by Ernest and Maxine Durnin. Next year's reu- nion was moved to be held the same time, the second Sunday in June, and at the same place. The nominating report for 1986 was given by Dora Shobbrook. The honorary couple are Garnet and Margaret Wright; Elgin Penfound, president; Ken and Joy Vodden, vice-presidential couple, and Garnet and Margaret Wright were also chosen as the secretary -treasurer couple. The committee consists of Dave and Bren- da Scholl, John and Bonnie Gibbings and Alan and Sylvia Ball. Prize for the youngest member went to Darren Scholl at 11 months. The oldest member is Ida Martin, age 85 years. Dave Petrie and family of Brantford cam the fur- thest distance. Sports were enjoyed by one and all with the sports committee consisting of Ron and Dianne Durnin, David Durnin and Lorna Riley, John and Nancy Ball, Bruce and Nan- cy Penfound. For the boys' eight and under running race, Michael Gibbings placed first with Scott Ball and Craig Machan in second and third. The girls' eight and under race was won by Sarah McClure, with Ashley Gibb- ings and Cara Chomicki behind her. For mixed eight to 15, the three top finishers were Duane Durnin, Mark Eveleigh and Chastity Colquhoun. Connie Chomicki took first place in the ladies' 15 and over division with Arva Machan and Nancy Ball follow- ing. The men's 15 and over category was won by Steven Ball with Frank Garrow and Colin McDonald in second and third. Ladies' kick slipper was won by Susan Eveleigh, second Janice Andrews and the men's was won by Wayne Andrews with Col- in McDonald in second. Chastity Colquhoun won the ladies' shoe scramble and Alan Bali won the men's counterpart. The pass -the -carrot relay was won by the Bill Gibbings team, the balloon race was won by Doug and Paul Petrie and the nail driving contest was won by Connie Chomicki. Violin and mouth organ music by Floyd Stanbury and Ernest Durnin was enjoyed by all. Happy Birthday was sung for Elgin Pen - found. Personals Visiting with Mr. and Mrs. Bob Burns last week was her niece Mrs. Mickie Ardies of Thornhill. Mrs. Mary Robinson of Hanover spent June 6 to 10 in the village and community visiting relations and friends. Hope Chapel Cemetery Board held a meeting June 5. The memorial decoration will be on August 25 at 3 p.m. The service will be conducted by. Rev. Dave Snihur of Londesboro United Church. Weekend visitors with Mr. and Mrs. Bob Thompson were his aunt, Annie Thompson and cousins Mr. and Mrs. Harold Boyle of Clarkesburg. They attended the Snell reu- nion on June 9 at Hullett Central School. On June 4 Mrs. Laura Lyon, Mr. and Mrs. Murray Lyon and Mr. and Mrs. Bert Lyon visited with the family of late, retired Sergeant Donald Holmes at Badder Funeral Home, Thamesville. Mr. Emerson Hesk at- tended the funeral on June 6. Farewell party for school principal By Dora Shobbrook LONDESBORO-A special farewell party for Angus MacLennan, principal at Hullett Central School will be held on June 16. Mr. MacLennan, who has been at the Hullett school for the past 13 years, is mov- ing to another school in the fall. His farewell party will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. with a special presentation to be made at 3:30 p.m. All former students and parents are invited to.attend. Donations will be taken at the door for the MacLennan penmanship award that will be presented to a Grade 8 graduating student each year. People report Sympathy is extended to the Reid family on the death of Lori Christine, 25, of Win- throp. She is survived by her husband Donald, parents-in-law Bob and Edna Christine and grandparents -in-law, Les and Hazel Reid. Sympathy goes out to the family of Mary Isabella White of Springfield, who died on May 31 at the age of 88. She was the widow of the late J.T. White who was minister in Londesboro from 1953-1957. ' Congratulations goes out to John and Margaret Verburg on the birth of their daughter, Sarah Anne, born on May 20 at Clinton Public Hospital. June Fothergill attended the UCW Westminister weekend on May 25 at the University of Western Ontario, London. Delegates attending the District Annual Conference in Wingham on May 27 were WI members Helen Lawson, Alice Buchanan and Margaret Taylor. The WI education meeting will be held on June 12 at 7:30 p.m. at the CN School Car on Wheels in Clinton's Sloman Park. Roll call will ask members to suggest an idea about separate school funding. Be sure to bring a friend to this special meeting. Mr. and Mrs. Carl Longman and Mary Longman visited on Sunday with Mr. and Mrs. Charlie Waymouth in Stratford. Dora Shobbrook is pleased to announce the birth of her great grandson, Robert Cur- tis Blake, born on June 1 to Dora Lynn and Robert of Clinton, in Clinton Public Hospital. He weighed seven pounds, 3 ounces. Congratulations to Sam Doherty and Thelma Stacey who were married on June 1. Word was received this week of the sud- den death on June 1 of Sergeant Donald Holmes, 64, of Halibury. He retired from the police force in January. He was the son of the former Edna Lyon and nephew of Ida Durnin, Laura Lyon and Emerson Hesk and Olive Gaunt. Funeral services will take place in Thamesville on Thursday, June 6. Wayne, Gloria Jackson and Sandra of Ridgetown spent the weekend with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Tom. Allen and at- tended a surprise party at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Ken Shortreed in Blyth for Charles and Shirley Shobbrook's 25th wedding an- niversary. Beth Knox visitedher cousins, Mr. and Mrs. Ken Hobbs in Ailsa Craig and she and Hilda attended the opening of Ronald McDonald House, at the Westminister Cam- pus of Victoria Hospital in London. Nancy Andrews and friend Maureen Calahan of Toronto spent the weekend with' her grandparents, Mr. and ,Mrs. Edwin Wood. •On Sunday, Cliff and Kay Saiindercock and Gordon and Darlene Shobbrook were guests of John and Linda Saundercock of Woodstock. They attended the Oxford Chapter of the Gold -Wings Bike Rally. Mr. and Mrs. Bob Thompson celebrated their 45th wedding anniversary on May 29. They visited with their family at the cottage on Conestoga Lake and attended the baseball game when the Toronto Blue Jays faced off against the Cleveland ,Indians on June 1. Happy Gang, 1984-'85. Crystal Whyte gave the call to worship. Bryan Howatt led in prayer. Brian Whyte read the scripture and a skit on the Lord's Prayer was presented by David Whyte and Bert Lyon. Bill Jewitt presented the message, entitl- ed Sharing Time. Bill also led the anthem with his guitar accompaniment. Vice President Audrey Thompson opened the meeting. Roll call was answered by 23 members and three visitors. Stella Adams read the minutes from the last meeting and Margaret Taylor gave the treasurer's report. Happy Gang members will attend supper at Huronview on June 26. As well afternoon entertainment at 2 p.m. will feature Earl and Martha Heywood. • The seniors convention will be held in Kingston in September. The Happy Gang group agreed to give graduation awards to the Grade 8 boy and girl students at Hullett Central School who have highest marks in geography, history ' and French.
