Holmesville School will not be quiet this
summer - at least not for three days in mid-
July. As part of Goderich Township's ses-
quicentennial celebrations, the school will
be the site of a teachers' reunion and school
exhibits.
The committee which has been responsi-
ble for arranging the reunion and display
consists of Chairperson Barb Betties, Helen
Dykstra and Alison Lobb. Much has been ac-
complished since their first meeting on
January 7, 1985.
During the early years of education in
Goderich Township, the township was divid-
ed into eleven school sections. Each section
had its own schoolhouse and teacher. Bet-
ties says 149 invitations have been mailed to
former teachers, music teachers and in-
spectors. In addition, 18 invitation have
been hand delivered to present day teachers'
at Holmesville School.
The teachers' reunion will take place on
Saturday, July 20, beginning after the
parade (at approximately 2 p.m. ). Teachers
will register at the door anri will hnn'P :,n nr,--
portunity to visit and reminisce in the
auditorium. Lists Of the names of all the
teachers of each school section will be on
view. A photographer will be on hand to take
group photos, and these polaroid pictures
may be purchased that day.
Holmesville School will also house
numerous exhibits in five classrooms and in
the auditorium. Each school section will be
represented. Betties has contacted one per-
son from each section, and they have
become responsible for recruiting helpers,
choosing themes and gathering articles.
Each school section will have a different
theme. For example, one will feature an old-
fashioned parlour; another, an old-
fashioned laundry; a third, a pioneer kit-
chen; and a fourth, a map of its school sec-
tion showing the names of farm owners -
then and now. Each dispaly will consist of
furniture, clothing and other items donated
by current and former residents of the sec-
tion.
Two churches will also be featured - pre-
sent day Middleton Church and church of
rations
the past Ebenezer. The Ebenezer Church
organ, now owned by Murray Draper of
Clinton, will be included along with the Bi-
ble, pulpit, chairs and rug.
Other Goderich Township groups will also
take part. In the auditorium, displays will
be set up by the two Goderich Township 4H
clubs and the Women's Institute along with
exhibits by two local artists and a doll col-
lection numbering 115. Dutch Canadian
residents of Goderich Township will also
have a display in the school, and on Friday
afternoon the seniors will demonstrate the
art of quilting.
The exhibits will be open to the public on
Friday, July 19, from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m.; on
Saturday, July 20, from 2 p.m. to 9 p.m.; and
on Sunday, July 21, from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. A
representative will be on hand to explain
each display.
The school exhibits and teachers' reunion
will provide a fascinating walk down
memory lane in the life of Goderich
Township.
Preliminary work completed for Atlas
Containing more than 600 contributions
from Huron families, organizations and
municipalities the Huron County Atlas this
week moved towards a mid-October
publication with the completion of
preliminary work. First pages of the 352
page Atlas went forward to the printers last
week and the first press run of 48 pages is
scheduled for completion and to be ready for
binding by July 1. Further press runs of at
least 32 pages will follow each week and as
soon as all the printing is completed, the
work of binding the book gets underway.
Containing nearly one million words, the
Atlas will include maps of each of the 26
Huron municipalities as well as of nearly 40
hamlets. The names of the owners of proper-
ties of 40 acres or more appear on the
township maps. Included as well is a list of
small lot holders in the county - those own-
ing property•of less than 40 acres.
In reviewing the progress being made
towards publication Grant Stirling, Reeve of
Goderich township and Chairman of the
Atlas Committee said that when productior4
of the Atlas was first authorized by Counct
a volume following the style and size of tl
1879 Beldon Atlas with perhaps 175 pagl
had been contemplated. However increa

Goderich township taxes will increase
close to five per cent for 1985 because of a
raise in education and county taxes.
What this means for a taxpayer, based on
a $3000 tax assessment is an increase of
$33.93 over the 1984 rate. A township resi-
dent who paid $655.28 for 1984 will pay
$689.28 in taxes for 1985.
While the township rate remains the same
as last year, education rates have increas-
ed. Residential and farm public school sup-
porters are taxed based on. a mill rate of
229.76 mills and and residential and farm
separate school supporters on a rate of
230.45 mills.
Commercial increases are based on 270.30
mills for public school and 271.11 mills for
separate school. . 1
The mill.rate for the county portion of the
taxes is up 4.93 ,mills.

resulted not only in a much larger book of
well over 300 pages but also contributed to
production delays.
Reeve Stirling said that while the commit-
teehad confirmed the previously establish-
ed pre -publication price of $45.00, it was
regretted that at the same time it had been
necessary to establish a post publication
price of $59.50 to reflect the increased
number of pages in the Atlas.
Those interested in obtaining an Atlas at
the pre -publication price may continue to do
so by purchasing an Atlas certificate by for-
warding $45.00 to the Atlas Office, Court
House, Goderich. The certificate may then
be exchanged for an Atlas upon publication.
Following publication copies of the Atlas
will be available at a number of . retail
outlets in the county that have completed ar-
rangements with the committee, Reeve
Stirling said. As well, following publication,
copies may continue to be purchased direct-
ly from the Atlas ofice but at the post
publication price of $59.50.
Reeve Stirling added that as soon as
, a publication date is determined the public
will be advised by announcements in the
county press and by other media.
