Clinton News-Record, 1985-6-12, Page 3dith Swan retires after 42 years teaching
BRUCEFIELD - The time is fast ap-
proaching for one of Huron Centennial's
teachers to celebrate her swan song.
Edith Swan began teaching 42 years ago
and will retire in June. Her teaching career
started in a one -room schoolhouse north of
Brucefield after her graduation in 1942. She
found that experience - teaching all grades
in the one -room school - both busy and
frustrating, she says.
"I was fairly new and fairly young," says
Mrs. Swan.
By the time she came to Brucefield,
though, she "was getting into the swing".
She has lived in the area most of her adult
life, having taught in Clinton, Stanley and
now Brucefield. She took off 16 years to
raise her own family - daughter Barbara
and son Paul (both of whom are now
•teachers), as well as Doug and Kevin.
Mrs. Swan would have difficulty isolating
a single fond memory of her years in
teaching.
"I've enjoyed it all," she says. "I have
warm thoughts all the way through."
Her activities will now include tending her
garden. "It needs me now", she says, as
well as reading, knitting and visiting with
friends and family, including her four
grandchildren..
But most importantly, she says, "I'd like
to take the time to live."

from Vincent Farm Equipment Limited of

It will replace the old lawnmower sold to
John Merner of Bayfield for $635.
Council approved the bylaw designating
the W.R. Hearn property on Highway 8 east .
•of Clinton as of historical interest. This love-
ly old home, overlooking the Bayfield River,
was built by Henry Ransford about 1834 at
Stapleton and preserved and renovated by
several owners. Mr. and Mrs. Hearn are the

Council decided to apply to the Ministry of
Transportation and Communications for ad-
ditional supplementary subsidy allocation
for the reconstruction of bridge No: 14 at lot

engineers estimated cost of reconstruction
at $471,000.

Council will ask that all motorized
vehicles be prohibited within the township
from public parks and tax registrationpro-

in the local papers' at Seaforth, Clinton and
Exeter.
The Ministry of Natural Resources is
planing to carry out a Rabies Armed Gait

Spurr, Entension Services Supervisor of the
Ministry of Natural Resources and Dr.
Charles D. McGinnis, Supervisor of Wildlife
Research Section of that ministry attended
the meeting to discuss the progam. Council
said no complaint to the 1984 program have
been received and hoped the trials in the
future, would be successful.
Diane Durniri, recreation director at the

Summer school offered in Clinton
CLINTON - Summer School 85 is being)
offered at Central Huron Secondary School
in Clinton from July 2 to July 26. Improve-
ment courses will be offered for secondary.
students in English and Mathematics.
Remedial courses in English and
Mathematics will also be offered for
students in Gr. 7 - 8. English as a second,
language and driver .education will also be
available.
Previous surnmer schools have proven
that a student can achieve better results
through concentrating his/her efforts in one
subject area. Administrators from various
Huron County schools have assured me that
they are pleased with the improved work-
habits
orkhabits and the positive subject attitudes that
students have obtained at summer school.
Summer School 85's prime objective is to '
enable a student to maintain a better stan-
ding in a subject in which he/she is having
difficulty. A highly concentrated, ac-
celerated program of study is offered which
will enable the student to gain a better
understanding of •toe Subject with which
he/she has had difficulty.
Students who are interested in Surruner
School 85. should contact his/her school prin-
cipal, teacher, • or guidance department
head.
