Disturbing
message for
congregation
By Mary Chessell
VARNA - Gordon Erb had an interesting
and sometimes disturbing message for the
Varna Church congregation on Sunday. He
spent two months m Ethiopia with his
daughter Carol who, with her • husband,
works for the Christian Blind Mission Inter-
national in Addis Ababa.
He found a primitive society there. While
there are beautiful homes built of cut stone,
with tiled roofs and gardens, there are
squatter's huts between them.
Most Ethiopians do not have cutlery. They
snake a bread that has a honeycomb tex-
ture on top and use it to pick up other foo
The poor people eat a vegetable soup that
hotly spiced.
Mr. Erb wasn't able to visit refugee
camps in Ethiopia, as it's hard to get a per-
mit to travel. He received a lot of informa-
tion from Esther Becker, a Mennonite from
Pennsylvania who has taught English in
Kenya for 34 years, and from a Catholic
priest who is head of Catholic relief and
education there.
He also visited Kenya for two weeks,
where Annie Houston from New Zealand
told him that half the children who reach
help in the camps die anyway from diseases
caused by malnutrition and poor sanitation.
Protein also causes death in children
because of liver failure. Many starving
children seem worse off if they live because
of mental retardation from malnutrition,
and because they are often shot by the
government. There is a great deal of leprosy
and few surgeons to operate on them. Soap
and hot water, which they don't have would
prevent most leprosy, Most relief gets to the
people who need it, Mr. Erb says, a bit of it
by way of the black market.
The Marxist revolution in Ethiopia came
by way of the universities. Mr. Schenk of
Pennsylvania, who was a teacher in
Ethiopia and had returned to see what
changes had occurred,,told him that most o
the students were influenced to becornlir
Marxist before the revolution, but now he
can hardly find a Marxist in the univer-
sities. There are many Marxist professors
in universities, which makes Mr. Erb ner-
vous. He feels Canadian courts are being
subverted and the economy destroyed by
them.
Lack of tools is a major problem for
farmers in the fertile parts of African coun-
tries, in that area. South of Addis Ababa
there were large fields of barley which had
to be harvested with a sickle. Any crop will
grow in Uganda, but the farmer only has a
hoe to work with.
Mr. Erb claims the news we get about
those countries is full of half-truths. The real
battle in this world is for men's minds.
Christianity is under assault' everywhere.
The Mennonite Church had 6,000 members
before the revolution. They and all
Evangelicals were done away with because
they 'confronted the system. However, he
claims the Christian Church will survive
longer than the Marxists and experts a
counter revolution will soon occur.
