Season too long
It's over, and not a day to soon. At least
those are my feelings on the NHL playoffs.
It might be partly due to being a bad loser,
after all the underdogs deserve to win once
in awhile don't they? But I think the real
reason is the length of the season.
I have this theory. When the grass begins
to turn green, it's time for golf, tennis, bad-
minton and other similar sports. When the
leaves turn color it's time for football. When
the snow falls it's time for skiing, curling,
broomball and hockey. So, when the snow
melts, we hang up our skates and get ready
for the next season. Well, maybe not that
quickly, but at least within a reasonable
length of time.
The explanation given for the season run-
ning later was that the season started later,
therefore, it did not run longer, just later.
Apparently the NHL organizers did this to
increase early season gate receipts. They
figured the attendance wouldn't be as high if
they started the ceesnn whiles the World
Series was on. But no matter how late in the
year the season went, they would still be
able to get the crowds out to the Stanley Cup
playoffs, and they were right.
Despite the lateness of the finals, the
playoffs did have their moments of excit-
rnent. There were times when 1 thought that
the mighty Oilers really would go down to
defeat at the hands of the Flyers. But those
moments never lasted long.
As much as I don't like to admit it, the
Oilers were good. No they were great.
Players like Paul Coffey, Huddy and of
course Wayne Gretzky, flew past the Flyers
with little difficulty. Mark Howe and Brad
Marsh were the few stand -outs for the losing
team. '
I don't know whether the NHL organizers
plan on running the season over the same
time period next year, but I hope they don't.
I can't concentrate on hockey and baseball
at the same time.

KITCHENER - After an excellent showing
at Western Ontario Secondary School
Athletics (WOSSA), seven Central Huron
Seconday School ( CHSS) athletes competed
at the West Regional Track and Field
Championships on June 1. Two of the seven
athletes, Austin Roorda and Scott Millar,
qualified to advance to Ontario Federated
School Athletic Association (OFSAA ). .
Competing against the best athletes in
southwestern Ontario, Scott Millar finished
second in the senior boys shot put with a
throw of 15.69 meters. Austin Roorda
finished third in the senior boys triple jump
with a new school record jump of 13.52
meters.
Other CHSS athletes who competed in
Kitchener were Byron Boyes and the midget
girls 4x100 meter relay team.
. Boyes finished seventh in the junior boys
high jump with a jump of 1.85 meters. The
relay team, composed of Julie Trick, Susan
Govenlock, Karen Uyl and Heather Bauman
finished ninth with a time of 53.8 seconds.
Although these athletes did not do well
enough to advance, they put forth another
fine effort.
Fair ATV races draw crowds
CLINTON-Saturday June 1 was the day that
the ATV's took over the Clinton Racetrack.
CRC Productions of Clinton,, produced the
show at the 1985 .Clinton Fair.
The track was constructed on the
racetrack, complete with jumps and berms
in less than an hour and a half. Five truck ,
loads of dirt were used in the construction.
Spectators were entertained to a two and a
half hour show that was one of the best rac-
ing events of the season. Local riders got the
fans on their feet and the loudest cheers as
they took on the out of town riders from all
across Ontario.
In the out -of -field class Jeff Chuter and
Steve Taylor both of Varna battled it out for
top honours in both motos.
Taylor, in his first ATV race, finished
third overall with Chuter taking top overall.
Paul Farquhar of Clinton and Mike Rum-
mey of Strathroy fought tooth and nail in the
200 Modified class. They tied in points but
Rummey finished first in the second moto to
win first overall.
Byron Boyce had animpressive lead in
the 250 Stock last chance qualifier when he
experienced some mechanical problems
putting him out for the rest of the night.
John Parke from Varna brought his own
cheering section with him but it wasn't
enough to help him finish in the top three of
his class. He finished fourth overall in the
200 Modified.
In other race action, spectators were
treated to a fast and furious 4 -wheeler race.
Marty Jackson of Listowel and Chris Baren-
df egt of Port Stanley rode on each others
back doors for both motos. Jackson won
overall and Barenriregt had to settle for se-
cond.
The hi . ,2 tale of the night was in the Open
Mod where: the 3 -wheelers met the 4 -wheeler
for an all ueut rar . Two qualifiers were ran
with Jeff Howe of Minden winning the first
moto, Brent Van Moorsel of Mitchell second
'and. Mike Rummey of Strathroy finished
third, The second qualifier was won by
Chris Barendregt with Chuck Collins and
Marty Jackson finishing second and third.
In the final heat Chuck Collins, who started
in the second row, fought through the traffic
to beat Jeff Howe. on lap number eight to
'take first overall, Howe had to take second
- and Brent Van Moorsel in third. ATV. race
action will continue on June 23 when they
will meet at Hully Gully. ,
