Poor turnout at variety show

A variety night was held last Saturday
night at the Blyth Memorial Hall. Despite
the poor turnout, the program was enjoyed
by all.
Dave Medd was the master e rof15
ceremonies. Those taking part
young ladies from Blyth Public School who
under the direction of Shirley Vincent sang
two songs, "Perhaps Love and Today sort of
a multi Duet style. Eight girls did a
multitude of tumbles, rolls, flips under the
coaching of Mrs. Betty Bettye. Just plain
Folk -girls singing group from Teeswater
Area sang various songs.
A ladies and gents singing group from
Central Huron Secondary School Clinton
performed under the direction of Louise
McGregor. Kim Craig tapped out a couple of
selections. She was the 1984 Canadian open
Champion, Kim Craig along with Kim Hut-
ton from Listowel and Donna Raynard from
Sta
Lucknow performed. Mrs. Barnette Smith
from Brussels played the organ. Peter Dek-
ker of Listowel sang a few songs. Dave
Medd thanked everyone for corning.

A busload of Brownies, Guides and
mothers attended the Maple Way Rally on
June 1, to celerate 75 years of Guiding in
Canada.
Catholic women meet
The St. Michael's Catholic Women's
League met on May 2 at the home of Mary
Sanders with 10 members answering roll
call with the year they joined the league.
A reading called "A Creed" was read by
Nellie Van Bakel.
.A donation of $25.00 was sent to the
Wingham and District Hospital. The
mystery prize was donated by Anna De Jong
and won by Mary Sanders.
The next meeting will be held on
Thursday, June 6 at 8:30 p.m. at the home of
Joanne Campschraen.
Memorial to be unveiled July 1

June 9 the annual Decoration Sunday will
be held at Blyth Union Cemetery at 2:30
p.m. Please try to attend.
The next regular meeting for Royal Cana-
dian Legion Branch 420 will be June 6 at
8:30.
Veterans Affairs Canada Will unveil a
memorial in one park in each province and
territory, taking place on July 1 - Canada
Day. Ontario's ceremony is being held at •
Point Pelee National park. Anyone wishing
to attend should contact our nearest
Veterans Services District Offices for the
time of the ceremony. The wording on the
plaques, will read: " They will never know
the beauty of this place, see the seasons
change, enjoy nature's chorus. All we enjoy
we owe to them, men and women who lie
buried in the earth of Foreign Lands and in
the seven seas. Dedicated to the memory of
Canadians who died overseas in the service
of their country and so preserved our
Heritage."
The Penny Sale is corning up June 20, 21
and 22nd - sponsored by Ladies Auxiliary.
During July and August there is no
regular meetings for the Legion or Ladies
Auxiliary.
Blyth Branch 420 was represented by two
teams at the recent invitational euchre tour-
nament held in Grand Bend. Teams were
comprised of Arthur McClure, Bruce Smith,
Ray Lair, William Riehl, Bill Alexander,
Elliott Lapp, Dane Overboe and Art Airdrie.
Both teams finished out of the money but
report inany new and renewed friendships.
Sports officer Art Airdrie has posted infor-
mation regarding upcoming golf and
horseshoe tournaments as has fraternal
sports officer' Barney Stewart. Additional
Sumner Events include plans for a. Family
Gaines. Day and Picnic and Slo-Pitch'
tourney. Watch for information on these and
other events posted on the Legion sports
bulletin board.

Officer Cadet F. Victor Falconer, son of
Mrs. Kay Appleby of Lucan, (formerly of
Clinton), completed his second. year of
studies at Royal Roads Military College in
Victoria, B.C. on May 18. During' the sum-
mer Officer Cadet Falconer will train in the
Communications and Electronics classifica-
tion of the Canadian Armed Forces. In
September, Officer Cadet Falconer will
enter the Royal Military College in Kingston
and will continue his studies towards an
Engineering Physics degree.
Guards

message from the Farm Safety Association.
College student receives eight awards
CENTRALIA - In record breaking style,
Bert Reinink, •ABM '85 received eight
graduation awards at the May 16
ceremonies at Centralia College of
Agricultural Technology. The dedicated
Walton area youth has prepared admirably
for a career as a pork producer.
During his. two. years, the 21 -year old
Reinink earned the respect of his teachers
and the affection of his classmates. Endless
superlatives would nut fully describe .the
superior qualities of this quiet farm lad.
During 1985, International Youth Year,
Centralia College hails the achievements of
Bert Reinink. proudly. The honours
graduate of the Agricultural Business •

• The Food • Service Management com-
mended a top student and multiple award
winner, Colleen Laing, Waterloo.
Outstanding in her academic studies and
leadership ability,. Laing also topped the
class in job searching. In April she began
full-time employment at Conestoga College
as a food service supervisor responsible for
staffing and the smooth operation of food
service. Laing successfully juggled com-
muting daily with college deadlines.
Graduating with honours, Laing was pro-
claimed:
- Highest Proficiency in Foods 'Technology
Program Middlesex 'County Women's In-
stitute;
- Proficiency in Foods and Nutrition Ontario
Dietetic Association:
- Proficiency in Food Service Administra-
tion Garland Commercial Ranges.
Honours graduktion diplomas were
presented to 17 of 'the 23 Animal Health
Technology candidates. The proportion is
especially significant knowing the scientific
orientation of the program and the high
level of excellence demanded by the college.
For their special type of enthusiasm, plus
scholastic achievement, Centralia College
rewarded three graduates. Scott Utter, Nor-
wich was, named "Best All Round Student"
and Wayne Kennedy, Ilderton was voted
runner-up. For his talent and mana3er-like
qualities, Steven Barendregt, Union, Past
President of Student Activity Council,
received. the "Minister of Agriculture &
Food Leadership Award".
Jeff Van Wyk, Clinton, was also among
the award winners. earning the Best Farm
Project Group, awarded by Cook's Division
of Geri -5o Corporation.
Former principal of Centralia College,
James A. MacDonald, guest speaker, en-
couraged the 110 graduates to be involved in
their communities. "Don't wait for others to
look after your interests, eg. governments,
agencies, organizations or planning com-
mittees - they just might screw things up.
.Get involved and be prepared to stand up
and take a position."
