CLINTON - Percival K. Pugh has seen a
lot of changes in Clinton, new arena, new
post office, and participated in one of the
biggest changes as first and until June 1, the
only manager of the Clinton Brewer's Retail
outlet.
The store was built in 1960, shortly after a
temperance law which had kept the town
dry for the twentieth century and some of
the nineteenth had been easily repealed.
Percy was on the delivery truck out of the
Stratford beer store before he moved here -
he's in his 37th year with the company - and
got to know some people in the area at that
time. Before that he spent some time in the
army and as a guard at a Guelph jail.
His move here made him a permanent
resident. When people ask if he and his wife
Doreen, a native of Sheffield, England - and
on September 12 of this year a partner for 40
years - will retire to Stratford he says,
s', for Percy
"Clinton is my home town now, we've made
a lot of wonderful friends here." His son
David lives here with his family while his
daughter Suzanne lives in Stratford.
As well as developing lasting friendships,
Percy has also become involved in com-
munity life. He is a former Kinsmen and on
May 27 received his 40 year pin from the
Royal Canadian Legion. He also served as
president of the Clinton branch for the 1980-
'81 term. He is a member off the Masons,
Clinton Branch 84 and he belongs to the Bap-
tist Church.
He's seen a lot of changes in the system at
the store. At one time customers had to fill
out order slips, just as in some of today's li-
quor stores. Also, in the earlier'days there
were two bottles, both larger and in white
and green glass. After that the familiar
compact brown bottles came in but now
"We've got everything." '
Now each company has its own bottles,
longer necked bottles, screw caps, brown
and green and all to be sorted. And now
aluminum cans are popular. Where one
pallet would do for piling empties, it now
takes two and there's a huge box for dump-
ing in cans by the dozen.
The aluminum can issue behind the recent
lockout or strike, depending on your point of
view, didn't stop Percy from coming into the
store everyday.
"You're supposed to clean up your stor
and wait for the call but after the first co
ple days the store was clean. It was a littl
holiday," he joked.
And it seems the aluminum can is getting
more popular.
After Percy hands over the reins to Bob
Sperling, the new manager, he's planning
on working on his old cars - "My wife hates
'em," he laughed - and doing some travell-
ing - just taking it easy.
4H'ers develop leadership skills
CLINTON - A recreation and leadership
evening for Huron County will be presented
by the Seaforth and area 4-H Leadership
Club. It will be held at 7:45 p.m. on
Thursday, June 13th in the cafeteria of Cen-
tral Huron Secondary School, Clinton.
Ten senior 4-H members under the direc-
tion of Don Dodds, Bryan Vincent and Peter
Vandeborne hav spent the last two months
improving upon and developing , their
leadership skills.
The club members have learned that par-
ticipation in 4-H activities is one of the best
methods to enhance leadership skills.
During the course of the evening, group
members will present seminars on social
recreation, public speaking, personal
values, leadership styles, team work and
communication.
It is the hope of the group that the general
public will support these young leaders by
attending this event and seeing these poten-
tial leaders of tomorrow in action.
