Better known as "The Pearl of the Caribbean", Margarita Island boasts some of the world's most beautiful sunsets. Venezuela's currency, the "bolivar", has devaluated some 350% and tourists soon learn to appreciate the value of the Canadian dollar. Exchange rates fluc- tuate almost five times a day however, and at times it seems almost impossible to get the best exchange rate. U.S. cash is however, more widely accepted than Canadian and is great when bartering for clothing, gold and various other articles. Carousel Tours, one of Toronto's leading wholesalers, offers a choice of 2 hotel i and .1 apartment complex to the tourist. Juan El Griego Apart- ments are located just minutes from a quaint fishing village. These lovely apartments are fully furnished and offer spacious rooms, com- plete with cooking and eating utensils, tennis courts and a pool. The "four-star" Hotel Bella Vista couldn't be in a better location. Palm trees shade the lovely beach beside the hotel and yet the Island's main shopping centre is only walking distance away. Modest- ly furnished rooms and a number recreational activities are offered. •Lint, but not least, the "five-star" titcti,::rtta Concorde }t„i. 1 ::tfiliated with the ('r • • • ,Ie chain,- is it's own little 1,<o• a magnificent , • ! v. room is com- fortnhk• furnished with it's own private balcony and the hotel is complete with a night club, tennis courts, three pools and a variety of water sports. Shopping is only, minutes away. Directly outside, the Margarita Concorde is the tour company Ordelco, which offers six different island and mainland tours to the tourist. The tours range in price from $5 to 5163 U.S. and, while all of there are good, the ex- cursion to El Agua Beach should not be missed El Agua Beach ..:.,!..?scribed as the sunny ocean beach front in the Caribbean. If you enjoy seafood, dining on the Island is a seafood -lover's paradise and a complete meal hardly ever exceeds 57 Canadian. Venezuela is well known for specializ- ing in red snapper, shrimp, lobster and shark and don't be a bit surprised if you find ac- tual shells in your clam chowder. If you don't like seafood, the restaurants try to please everyone. Veal Cordon Bleu, steak and roasted chicken are other Island specialties and two outstanding restaurants you might like to try are El Chipi and Guarqueri. Both can be reached easily by taxi. Porlamar is Margarita's duty free port and here, you can find a wide variety of very chic European clothing and shoes. Diamonds are a girl's best friend and are also an exceptional buy on Margarita. 18 karat gold is another good buy. With petroleum oil as their main financial asset, Venezuela is working hard to pro- mote the tourist in- dustry but with Spanish being the predominent language on the Island, you may find com- municating with island natives a minor problem. A •fair percentage of hotel staff do speak fluent English.. If you want something different with a tropical and un- commercial atmosphere, Margarita is for you. Endless sunshine, un- touched beaches, friend- ly people and historical sites make it an un- forgettable paradise. Package tours to \'=mezuela are available.
