he had to go home. He finally received
the third draft. He had to take it or he
would remain behind as part of the oc-
cupational forces for an indeterminate
amount of time.
The July 1996 wedding the couple had
planned was suddenly moved to January
15, causing some of the town's gossipers
to ponder possible pregnancy.
That, though, came the first night the
two were reunited in Canada. Nine mon-
ths to the day the couple ended their un-
wanted separation, Francyna walked to
the hospital in Antigo ash, Nova Scotia
and gave birth to a dahter.
The two were married for five days
before Paul had to return to his home
country. Eight months later, following a
voyage on the Queen Mary, the couple
was reunited in Halifax.
The young man returned to Sheticamp,
Nova Scotia with his bride. Francyna
had her few English lessons but Paul's
parents were French. Until the couple's
rented house was ready she lived two
rather uncomfortable weeks trying to ad-
just to the strange new life she had mar-
ried into.
The two lived in Sheticamp, then mov-
ed to Antigonish and worked in their own
restaurant, Paul having trained as a
cook.
Their next move took them to a Cana-
an Forces Base in Nova Scotia and the
association with the armed forces has
continued throughout their lives.
Before their next move, which took
them to Toronto, Francyna went on her
first trip back to Holland and dealt with
the homesickness which had plagued her
for the two and a half years she had lived
in Canada. After her visit she wasn't as
desperately homesick again.
Finally they made their final move. An
old armed forces friend stationed in Clin-
ton found out that the family was in
Toronto. A Sunday visit to the Clinton
base resulted in a cooking job which
lasted for 20 years, until the base closed.
Francyna has been back to Holland
several times since that first trip which
settled her mind so she could live the rest
of her life in Canada away from family
and old friends.
Her and her husband are going to make
yet another visit to the place they first,
met. They will be commemorating the
40th anniversary of the end of the Euro-
pean theatre of operations in the second
global conflict.
Although her adjustment to a new
country was difficult Francyna says now
she wouldn't go to live in Holland.
Although she still has her Dutch accent,
her almost 40 years in Canada has made
her more Canadian than Dutch - another
piece of the Canadian mosaic.
