There was a network in the area which
kept him informed if Germans were in
the area of the farm. He said young girls
on bicycles would warn him and other
people if the Germans were around. If
they were around he would hide until
things were safe again.
They didn't come into the countryside
that often because they didn't know
where they were going. If they happened
to be around I went 'into the field and hid.
This happened quite a few times. The
Germans were always out and around
but not particularly in your spot," he
said.
While staying on the farm, he would
sometimes pay a visit to his uncle's
bakeshop in Zwolle where he learned the
basics of baking. He also worked as a
baker in Hardenburg with another uncle
during the war.
After the war, Mr. Van Loo recalled
that a lot of destruction was done to the
cities and towns. A lot of houses were
burnt and bombed out by the Germans
and in others doors, windows and floors
were gone which left the houses skeleton-
like. He also recalls the reaction of the
Jewish people when they were told the
war was over. They had not been outside
