Windmills are synonymous with
Holland. The history of wind machines in
the country dates back to the 15th cen-
tury when they were used to carry excess
water away from the precious land.
Windmills were Holland's saving grace
in the fight for land from the sea. They
also served a vital industrial role and
were used to grind wheat, saw wood,
even grind snuff and spices.
By the middle of the 19th century some
9,000 windmills were in use in Holland.
Today fewer than 1,000 remain.
Modern technology made the windmill
obsolete and they were gradually replac-
ed by steam pumps. Now there are
modern diesel or electric pumping sta-
tions.
Of the remaining windmills in Holland
today, only a few hundred are still
workable. They do not operate out of
necessity, but as a symbol of affection
and pride in the past.
That same pride has brought the great
wind machines across the ocean to
Canada. Today many Dutch immigrant.
families display' intricately crafted
miniature windmills on their properties.
The windmill, like the wooden shoe and
the tulip are all part of the old-fashioned
image of Holland. They may not repre-
sent the inodern technology and social
developments in the country today, but
they remain immportant aspects of
Holland's rich heritage.
