Delft pottery - a favorite
Booths selling the famed blue and
white Delft pottery can be found at
Klompen Feest.
The pottery displayed and sold at the
Feest may be locally produced, but the
style is as traditional to Holland as the
wooden shoe itself.
The origins of Delftware date back to
the beginning of the 17th century.
Although it was inspired by Chinese
porcelain, the pottery style soon evolved
as the country's national pottery.
The greatest potters centered in the
Delft region in southern Holland. At that
time some 30 different potteries produc-
ed Delft china. Today, only the Royal
Factory at Delft survives. Founded in
1653 it employs several hundred artists.
Authentic Delft designs bearing the De
Porceleyne Fles are expensive are rare
because each piece is hand -drawn and
created.
Today Delft fanciers can enjoy a little
piece of Holland with the variety of blue -
and -white variations that are available
throughout the world.
