Clinton News-Record, 1985-5-8, Page 23Women coining of age reflected in play
By Julie MacDonald
BLYTH - Today's woman is coming ol_
age. She's being recognized as man's equal
and valuable counterpart in every aspect of
life. But rather than a woman's area of
responsibility and concern being shifted
from home to business to reflect this trend,
a woman finds herself juggling the duties of
wife, mother, businesswoman and socialite.
This "superwoman phenomenon" is a re-
cent one, and its essence is captured
beautifully in Arlene Dunbar and Carol
Oriold's musical play currently touring the
area. "Superwomen (and Super Men)" por-
trays the lives of a farm wife, a female
manager, a secretary and a teacher in a
mixture of comic and tender vignettes. It
will be performed at Blyth on May 11.
"Superwomen's success and local appeal
lie in its script — a brainwave of Ms. Oriold
and Ms. Dunbar, two area teachers who, in
addition to writing the script, direct and act
in the production as well. In every scene, the
audience can smile and nod knowingly at
the situations faced by the women — another
dinner with no one around to eat it.
Local color similarly shines in every
scene — from two prideful hockey moms
squabbling about their sons' chances of
making the Junior "B" team, to scenes
centering on such locally recognizable
"leisure time" activities as doing the 20
Minute Workout and watching Another
World or Dynasty.
"Superwomen" takes the unrealistic
goals set for women — holding down a job,
taking the kids to ballet, hockey, the dentist,
cooking well-balanced meals, having
sparkling white laundry with Tide, being
supportive for a husband, all the while look-
ing attractive, even sexy — and dismisses
them as "a crock", professing that it's not
necessary to be a superwoman, it's enough
to be "just you".

"You Turnip You"
Guess Who!!
The show really belongs to Ms. Oriold and
Ms. Dunbar, as the farm wife and manager
respectively. Ms. Oriold ilituninates the
many facets of Wendy, the farm wife's
character, making her sympathetic and ac-
commodating but strong ,and opinionated as
well. Ms. Dunbar (Yvonne) capitalbes on
some touching moments with six-year-old
Ciaran Hanrahan -Powers of Brussels (as
her son, Duncan). She wrings sympathy
from the audience in her sincere concern for
the quantity and quality of time she spends
with her youngster. In her tender lullaby,
she pleads "please try to see that mommy
needs her job too".
The hectic schedules of the women are
reinforced by Betty Hunter (the secretary,
Joan) taking her lunch hours to make car
tune-up and dental appointments rather
than eating, and by Susan James ( the Grade
1 teacher, Linda's) wonderfully patient
nature in the classroom errupting into impa-
tience with her own child at home.
Don Lawrence and John Rutledge, as
husbands, provide the necessary male
presence but make no attempts to upstage
the women, which could drastically disrupt
the flow of events in the play.
The musical accompaniment provided by
Gerald Simpson (guitar), Dave McIntosh
(bass) and Jim Willis (violin) is appropriate
in style to the play script, though only Ms.
Oriold and Ms. Dunbar are consistently
comfortable singing the lyrics. They team
up for a vocal duet entitled "The Farmer's
Wife" in two part harmony to further
showcase their voices.
The seven member cast, in addition to
performing their major roles, play other
characters which at times can lead to confu-
sion, but for the most part adds to the humor
(as in Ms. Oriold's portrayal of Angela — a
six-year-old) .
The play, while being a good evening's
entertainment, makes a firm statement
about the concept of superwomen: "we
don't have to be the best there is as long 'as
we're just us".
"Superwomen (and Super Men)" comes
to Blyth Memorial Hall May 11, with pro-
ceeds being shared by i:he Blyth Festival. It
will also be staged at Stratford City Hall on
May 26, with profits shared by Stratford
Central Drama students. The play will
make three other . mid -western Ontario
stops.
