May 25 -June 2 marks the Third Annual National Physical Activity Week throughout Canada and the Second, Annual Clinton Fitness Week. The week highlights a celebration of physical activity, fitness and good clean fun. This year, organizers are hoping that half of the Canadian population will participate, and the Clinton Recreation Committee has planned events so Clinton residents can do their part. Recreation Director Kevin Duguay was pleased with the participation last year, but he is sure the 1985 challenge will produce even better statistics for Clinton. Although not all of the details are finaliz- ed, the recreation committee has printed many of the weeklong events in the Clinton Spring -Summer Recreation Guide. The week will kick-off with a badminton open house, held in conjunction with the Clinton and District Badminton Club. The demonstration of badminton skills and techniques will be held in the CHSS main gym starting at 1 p.m. on May 25. On the same day, it is hoped that the Clin- ton and area Girl Guides will participate in Fitfest '85, a program held to mark the 75th anniversary -of Girl Guides acres Canada May 26 will be a da; for family get .togethers and good old fashion picnic fun. Fitnic will feature everything expected of a traditional community picnic. A community information session will be stag- ed in the auditorium featuring a number of local area and provincial organizations. The final day of Clinton Fitness Week '85 will be the National Participaction Challenge. Everyone is asked to do an ac- • tivity of their choice for 15 minutes and hen record their names. (A system as to who to submit the names to has yet to be decided.) Clinton is being challenged by towns across Canada of equal population. In order to win, we need everyone's participation, so set 15 minutes aside to take a walk, jog, bike ride or toss a Frisbee. As an added incentive, there will be a free Trim -A -Size class, roller skating and ball hockey' session held. This list is just a preview of what is hap- pening during the week. As more details are finalized, we'll let you know. In the mean- time, set aside some time to take part in the activities. VANASTRA - Lifeguar0 are on duty to provide .a safe and enjoya 1e ertjrnamieht for, those who like to use the twat' Or leisure activities. Therefore, every lifeguard must know hoar to 4eal with uteri emergencies as well as h .9r to keep a safe environment• F The Vanastra Rereation -centre 1s developing a series of leadership coursesfor those who wish to develop personal safety or know how to deal with emergencies." Accor- ding to Cindy Connolly, Aquatic Director at the Centre, the bronze cross and the red cross leadership programs have already been completed. The next step is to finish the national lifeguard service program. which started on April 26 and ran until April 28. The second portion of the course will con- tinue on May 10 and run until May 12. A pre-requiste for the national lifeguard service program is the Royal Life Saving Society of Canada's (RLSSC) bronze cross plus the person must be at least 16 -years - old. The program can be taught to people who wish to work at either pools or beaches, but the Centre's program, taught by Tony Kyle of London, is geared for total pool opera- tions. These operations range from keeping a clean environment to public safety. "During the weekend, one of the things the participants will learn is how to deal with shallow and deep end spinals," said Cindy. She explained that shallow or deep end spinals occur when a person dives and hits their head, resulting in a broken back or neck. The program will teach the lifeguards how to immobilize the victim so no further injury can occur. The national lifeguard service program will put the participants through demanding and challenging training procedures before the 40 hours are up, but Cindy believes it is worthwhile. "If any one ever, gets the opportunity to take the course, ltj will be well worth the time and money ($75) spent." Improving their lifeguard skills are participants of the National Lifeguard Serive course held at the Vanastra Recreation Centre. 'The course was held over two weekends, pro- viding approximately 40 hours of teaching.
