Respected woman dies
Muriel Middleton
One of Goderich Township's most
respected citizens, Muriel K. Middleton,
died in Clinton Public Hospital on April 29.
She was t l .
The lifetime Goderich Township resident
was born December 3, 1896. She was the
daughter of James and Margaret Johnston.
Mrs. Middleton was active in her church,
St. James Anglican Church in Middleton.
She was a life member of the Anglican
Church Women. She was also a member of
the Eastern Star and an honorary member
of the Bayfield Agricultural Society.
Mrs. Middleton was predeceased by her
husband Fred Middleton. He died in 1970.
She is survived by seven children -
Margaret (Mrs. Bill Counter) of Clinton,
Kathleen (Mrs. Robert Campbell) of Clin-
ton, Ted and his wife Emily of Stratford,
Elizabeth (Mrs. J.E. Mullens) of Ottawa,
Don and his wife Audrey of Clinton, Barbara
(Mrs. A.A. Grindlay) of London, David and
his wife Marie of Clinton. Also surviving are
25 grandchildren and 11 great grand-
children. She was predeceased by one
brother Jack Johnston.
Funeral services were held at St. James
Church on May 1 with Rev. Aubrey Bell of-
ficiating. Interment followed in Bayfield
Cemetery. Beattie Funeral Home of Clinton
made the funeral arrangements.
Pallbearers were Mrs. Middleton's
grandsons, Robert Campbell, of Port Elgin,
Jim Middleton of Clinton, Randy Middleton
of Clinton, Bill Middleton of Stratford,
David Counter of Georgetown and David
Grindley of London.
Flower bearers were grandsons Dan and
Steven Campbell of Clinton, Chris Middleton
of Clinton, Paul and Fred Middleton of Clin-
ton and Dennis Middleton of Stratford.
Champion worker dies
Edward Henry (Ted) Clark
Edward Henry (Ted) Clark, 40, of
Auburn, died Monday, April 22 at Alexandra
Marine and General Hospital, Goderich.
The son of the late Henry Washington
Clark and Lola May Clark, he was born Dec.
3, 1944 in Brampton. He was married to
Brenda Sue Fleming on June 13, 1975 in
Goderich.
He was an expediater at Champion Road
Machinery, Goderich.
Surviving are his wife, two sons, Jason and
Matthew and one daughter, Michelle, all at
home, one brother, .1Art Clark, of Clinton,
and three sisters, Cheryl, Mrs. G. Smith of
Kincardine, Glenda, Mrs. A. Belair of Clin-
ton and Sharon, Mrs. D. Forrest, of Clinton.
He was predeceased by one sister Phyllis
Kehn.
Funeral services were held April 25 at the
Stiles Funeral Horne with Rev. G.L. Royal,
of Knox Presbyterian Church officiating. In-
terment Maitland Cemetery.
Pallbearers included Tudor Wain, Don
Scott, Frank Slater, Dick/Chalmers, Dave
Thiessen and Bill Tideswell. Flower bearers
were Alan, Michael and Wade Clark and
Michael Edward.
Former Clintonian dies
Mildred Louise Daw
A former Clinton resident, Mildred Louise
Daw of Mississauga died in . Mississauga
General Hospital on April 28. She was 70.
Mrs. Daw was born in London on March
29, 1915. She was the daughter of the late
Fransis E. Horner and Harriett Dew. She
lived in London until her marriage to Claude
Harvey Daw on September 4, 1934. The cou-
ple lived in London until 1948 when they
moved to Clinton where Mr. Daw and the
late Hap McAlpine ran a tractor dealership
(International) in the building on Victoria
Street, now occupied by Clinton Auto Parts.
In Clinton Mrs. Daw was a member of St.
Paul's Anglican Church. She was a member
of the Rebekah Lodge, the Clinton Kinettes
and the Clinton Legion. She was also a
member of the Order of the Eastern Star in
London.
In 1958 the T)awc left Clinton and returned

Jean, to Paul Norman Cook, son of Mr.
and Mrs. Norman Cook, Belgrave. The
wedding will take place in the Belgrave
United Church on Saturday, June 1, at 3
p.m. An open reception will follow at 9
p.m. in the Brussels, Morris and Grey
Community Centre.

there they went to Peterborough, Bob-
caygeon, Willowdale, Ottawa and finally
Mississauga where they retired in 1972. Mrs.
Daw spent the last 13 years of her life in
Mississauga.
Along with her husband, Mrs. Daw is sur-
vived by two children, Sandra (Mrs. John
Falconer) of Mississauga and Larry of Clin-
' ton. Also surviving are five grandchildren,
Marna (Mrs. Robert Culbert) of Lakehurst,
Sherri (Mrs. David Bird) of Brampton,
Michael Falconer of Clinton, Claude Daw of
Goderich and Brent Daw of Clinton, and
three great grandsons, Cal and Barry
Culbert and Jon -Michael Falconer.
' She is also survived by •her step -mother
Hazel (Mrs. Frank Horner) of Farmington
Hills, Michigan and one brother Frank
Horner of Grand Rapids, Michigan. She was
predeceased by a brother Harold Horner.
Mrs. Daw rested at the Ball and Falconer
Funeral Home in Clinton, which is owned by
her grandson Michael Falconer. Services
were held on May 1 with Rev. Gordo Sim-
mons from St. Paul's Church officiating.
Pallbearers included her son-in-law John
Falconer of Mississauga, grandsons Claude
Daw of Goderich, Brent Daw and Michael
Falconer of Clinton and grandsons -in-law
David Bird of Brampton and Robert Culbert
of Lakehurst. Interment was held in the
Clinton Cemetery.

Anglicans celebrate
l5Oth anniversary
CLINTON-Parishioners of St. Paul's
Anglican Church, Clinton, and.St. Thomas'
Anglican Church, Seaforth will join together
for a special service of worship on Sunday,
May 12th at 11 A.M. This is the first of a
series of services plannea for this year at St.
Paul's in celebration of their 150th Anniver-
sary.
The Right Reverend Morse Robinson, Suf-
fragan Bishop of the .Diocese of Huron will
be present at this service to conduct the
Order of Confirmation for members of both
parishes. Bishop Robinson, assisted by the
Reverend Gordon J.J. Simmons will include
in this service the baptism of Coleen Allana
Webster, infant daughter of Dorothy and
Brian Webster of Seaforth. •
Under the leadership of Laurel Lavis,
organist and choir leader of St. Paul's.
Anglican Church, an additional choir ha's
been rehearsing music for this service, and
will sing "All Things Bright and Beautiful",
"Morning has Broken", and "Lord We
Pray". Members of the ladies choir are
Mary Murphy, Jean Bartliff, Margaret Bri-
dle, Linda Reid, Jane Radly, Madeline
"Bud" Counter, Calista McNairn; and
Elizabeth Kettlewell... all . members of St.
Paul's,

needs donations
CL1NTON-The monthly meeting of the
Huronia Branch of the Humane Society was
held at the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture
and Food Office, Clinton, on May 1.
Bev Chowen and Catherine McKnight
gave a report on the meeting they attended
in Newmarket. A movie was shown which
had been put together showing people the
reasons why they should have their cats and
dogs spayed and neutered. The branch of-
fices discussed the different ideas used to
raise funds.
The Fund Raising Committee has booked
a booth at Klompen Feest to sell pop, draw
tickets, pens and membership payments.
Arrangements were made for volunteers to
work in the booth.
Donations are needed for the yard sale on
May25.
The Land Committee is looking into a
piece of land in Clinton to build the new
shelter on. A motion was passed to draft a
letter needed for approval from the head of-
fice.
Lorie Swan suggested that members visit
the schools to educate the children on the
care of animals. A special membership fee
may be introduced for the children along
with badges and T -Shirts.

celebrates mass
CLINTON - Rev. Patrick Phillips, 26, son
of Mr. and Mrs. Gordon Phillips, Mohawk
('rescent; Clintor who was ordained to the
priesthood at St. Peter's Cathedral Basilica,
London, by the Most Reverend John Michael
Sherlock, Bishop of London, on Saturday, •
May 4, celebrated his First Mass of
Thanksgiving at St. Joseph's Church in
Clinton, on May 5.
For the parish of St. Joseph's, Father
Phillips is the third parishioner to be '
ordained. He follows Father John Sharp, a
diocesan priest; and the late Father Edward
Tighe of the congregation of St. Basil.
Diocesan clergy, • family, local
parishioners and friends attended the mass
at which Dan Vere, Clinton, was the Master '
of Ceremonies. •The Reverend Michael.
Prieur of the staff of St. Peter's Seminary,
London, and Father Pat's spiritual advisor
at the seminary, delivered the homily
Speaking. of, the role ofthe priest in the
Modern church. •
Readers during the Mass were Brian
Phillips, brother of the celebrant and
Pauline Peacock of Blessed Sacrament
Church, Windsor, . where Father Phillips
served his pastoral internship. Gift bearers
:were Gordon and Colleen, the parents of the
celebrant, his sisters Sheila; Erin and
Kathleen, and Dan Vantighem, fiance of
Kathleen. Music' for the mass was provided,
by the choir of St. Joseph's, Clinton, and the
folk choir of Blessed Sacrament Church,
Windsor.
Prior ` to the concluding Fite several
presentations •were .made to Father Pat.
Kay Sharp, chairperson of St. Joseph's
Parish Advisory Board, presented a cheque .
on behalf of the parishioners of St. Joseph's,
Clinton, and St. Michael's, Blyth. From Bill
Brand, Worthy Grand Knight of Council
7645, the Knights of Columbus, Father
Phillip received a travelling mass kit.
Dorothy D.upee announced a reception
following the mass as the gift of the Catholic
Wonien's League. This was- attended by
those who had celebrated with Father
Phillips his Mass of Thanksgiving. •
Later a dinner for family, relatives and
friends was held at the Goderich Township
Hall. Sheila Phillips acted as Mistress of
C'ercmonies at the dinner.
Father Phillips completed his elementary
schooling at the Clinton Public School and
graduated in 1977 from Central Huron
Secondary School. In 1980 he received his
Bachelor of Arts degree from the University.'
of Western Ontario. Entering St. Peter'.s
Seminary in 1980, he received his Master of
Divinity degree in 1984.
Father Phillips will belassociate pastor at,
Sacred Heart Parish, Sarnia.
