a fire fighting squad and doesn't go to ex-
tremes in advertising its rescue
capabilities.
The group is very aware that getting in-
volved in a routine rescue operation m
which no lives are threatened could
tih° der
the department's primary-
fighting fires.
For the rescue operations, the equipment
van was purchased. It also helps in
transporting men to a call. r
There are also two fully equippedp um pe
trucks the newer used for both out of town
fires and in town blazes. The second travels
to a country fire "only on the rarest of occa-
sions."
To fight an out of town fire, the depart-
ment takes 10 men, the pumper and the 2,000
gallon tanker truck which goes to every
rural fire.
The 10 men and the pumper left in Clinton
are then available in the event a second fire
erupts.
An arrangement has been made to use the
Public Utilities Commission's truck with the
hydraulic lift arm in case some second story
dousing has to be done.
All the fire departments in the area have
worked out in advance a mutual aid system
of first and second call designations to sup-
port a force "in the middle of a full-blown
fire, like the recent Seaforth (main street)
fire."
All ttus equipment has been provided by
the Town of Clinton and Stanley, Goderich,
Hallett and Tuckersmith Townships in an
Area Fire Board.' Each municipality has
representation in the form of a councillor
and a percentage of costs agreed to when
the board was established.
"It turned out to be an excellent method of
operating the fire department with their
function primarily financing.
"In our experience, they've been very co-
operative: When there's a real definite need
for something, then we've got it," said Chief
Lobb.
Both one time Chief Neilans and present
Fire Chief Lobb stressed the importance of
a piece of common sense information they
wished passed along. Both emphasized the
