Clinton News-Record, 1985-4-24, Page 15Page 14-- TON NEWS -RECORD, WEDNESDAY, APRIL 24,1985 Sports From the stands By Anne Murejko Worthwhile performances The Clinton Town Hall has been a busy place over the past week, hosting the Four County Arts Seminar followed by Spring Showers '85. Spring Showers '85 was presented by the recreation committee and included three different performances. The week started off with Jibbery Jive, starring singer - songwriter Deborah Dunleavy. Two perfor- mances were planned for parents and children but unfortunately there was only interest enough for one show. On April 17 the Schneider Male Chorus entertained a smaller than anticipated crowd. But those that did attend were treated to an evening of exceptional singing that can't be heard over many radio sta- tions. The chorus has an impressive background. The group was founded in 1947 and has earned the reputation of being one of the most active and widely travelled choirs in Canada. They have also played to audiences in the United States. Some of their more noteable tours have taken them to sing before parliament members and government officials. In the United States they have been season openers for summer programs in Rochester, Milwaukee and Chautauqua. In 1965 the chorus performed in Bermuda, and in 1967, made a weeklong centennial tour,of Northern Ontario, presenting six concerts. As well as the above mentioned tours, and many others, the Schneider Male Chorus recorded their first professional record Sing a Rainbow in 1979. Their repertoire is one of variety. It in- cludes sacred, spiritual, folk and secular music. The Clinton audience enjoyed a little something from each of the sections on April 17. Conductor Fred Lehman does an excellent job leading the men in song and accom- panist Dianne Daniels also deserves special recognition for her performance on the piano. In the Schneider Male Chorus' program, they note "Although the chorus is made up of non-professional singers, our aim has always been to maintain a high standard of performance. Our men devote many hours of rehearsal and performance for the joy of singing." Their efforts certainly show. The final Spring Showers performance of the week was presented by The Toy Town Troupers Theatre Company and entitled, The Haunted Castle. This performance involved the entire family, but was geared for the children's entertainment. The hero of the play is a ghost named Gus who not only saves the lovely princess from marrying the villainous prince, but saves the king from financial ruin. Although not all of the performances were greeted with a packed house, maybe those that did attend will pass the word that they are worthwhile so others will be tempted to take in future events. + -i -+ Don't forget about the minor soccer registration and fun session on April 27 at the Clinton Arena. If not enough players register, the Clinton Minor Soccer League will no longer exist. The session will be held from 1-3 p.m. Clinton and area bowling news Tuesday Afternoon Ladies Karen's Krayfish .r-- 5309 Alice's Oysters 5261 Dale's Whales 5199 Iva's Lobsters 513.3 Mert's Minnows 4996 Mary's Dolphins 4927 Nora's Escargots 4874 Sheila's Sharks 4739 High bowlers were: Helen Faber, high single of 309; Karen Pounder. high triple of 712 and high average of 227. The meeting is an open invitation for the parents to learn about the club, to express their ideas and even to express their complaints. However, this year's meeting, as usual, was very poorly attended. Only 11 of the 18 ex- ecutive members were present and only one interested parent attended. However, despite the low attendance, the many facets of the club were fully discuss- ed. Particular attention was given to possi- ble solutions to problems and possible im- provements in the programs. The following people were elected to fill the executive positions for the 1985-86 skating season. Past -President, Carol Fox; President, Joan Merner; Vice -President, Marg Draper; Secretary, Karen Carter; Treasurer, Rita Powell. Other positions will be filled by: Sandra Burns, Vicki Col- quhoun, Cindy Fleet, Marj Hayter, Gail Blitz, Joyce Jenkins, Chrystal Jewitt, Sue LeBeau, Donna McCone, Norma Preszcator, Jan Rutledge and Elaine Shrop- shall. Despite the lack of interest by the parents, the Clinton Club is very active and the skaters enjoy a full program of varied ac- tivities. It is hoped that the 1985-86 season will be the best yet.
