PD days reduced
The Huron -Perth Roman Catholic
Separate School Board has cut back by one
professional development days for the 1985-
86 school year.
At its Apr118 meeting, the school board ap-
proved extending- school to June 27, 1986 and
the teaching staff will come back on Mon-
day, June 30 for a professional development
day.
Originally, the board had been asked to
approve a school year calendar which had
earmarked June 26 and 27 as professional
development days and no school for either
students or teachers on June 30.
St. Marys area trustee Ernie
Vanderschott said he has been told their is
difficulty in getting the curriculum taught in
the number of days allotted. There is a
minimum of 185 instruction days allowed by
the ministry of education and a maximum of
nine professional development days allow-
ed.
"I can't vote for this. We have the
minimum instruction days yet the max-
imum PD days," said Mr. Vanderschott.
Hesson trustee Arthur Haid said he didn't
think there are too many PD days.
However, he did say that while the ministry
sets down the maximum number of PD days
may be held, it is up to the individual school
boards to set the actual number. The Huron -
Perth Separate School Board has had nine
PD days for a number of years.
Superintendent of education John Mc-
Cauley said the two PD days at the end of
the school year have traditionally been
devoted to long range planning and ordering
materials for the next school year.
The remaining seven PD days will be held
on Sept. 3, which means school doesn't start
until the Wednesday after Labor Day, Sept.
20, Nov. 15, Dec. 13, April 11, May 9 and June
9.
The Christmas holiday will run from Dec.
23 to Jan. 3 inclusive and the mid -winter
break runs from March 10 to 14 inclusive.
Gifted students program
BY STEPHANIE LEVESQUE
The Huron -Perth Roman Catholic
Separate School Board's major thrust in
special education in the 1985-86 school year
will be to provide an enrichment program
for gifted students.
The annual review and approval of the
board's special education plan was done on
April 8. Superintendent of education Gaeten
Blanchette said there will be no increase or
decrease to staff this year.
"We'll maintain what we presently have,"
said Mr. Blanchette.
Now, for special education in Huron Perth
Separate Schools, there is one special
education co-ordinator, 15.8 special educa-
tion teaching positions, 11.8 resource
withdrawal teaching positions, three
teachers in self-contained classes, one
enrichment teacher, one speech language
pathologist, three teacher's aides and a
part-time psychologist.
In its focus on the enrichment students,
talent pools for each school will be made.
Mr. Blanchette said the talent pools will be.
made up of students who score 85 per cent in
two intelligence testing tests.
There will be general enrichment for all
students which will include such activities
A Place to Be
The hovering palm trees are swaying
gently in the cool breeze. The flaming red
sun is beating down hard, tanning my soft
moist skin. It is so quiet and peaceful. There
are huge cadet blue, salty waves curling
lightly as they reach the shore. The
mahogany sand twinkles as the breeze
brushes against it. The sky is light blue and
cloudless. Bright, orange, round, juicy
oranges are growing on trees. They look ex-
tremely delicious. -by Heather Brownridge

Talent pool students go one step further by
being involved in such activities as option
programs in creative writing, painting and
astronomy.
Mr. Blanchette said the "gifted" students
will go on further to be involved in activities
with a small number of other gifted students
from Huron and Perth. These activities are
expected to take place only twice k year and
are dependent upon transportation funding
from the ministry of education.
