Helen Stonehouse and her husband Lewis admire a plaque she received from the Ontario
Community Newspaper Association for placing second in the correspondent category.

BELGRAVE - After 20 years of faithfully
writing a community column for a variety of
weekly newspapers, Helen Stonehouse has
received the recognition she deserved.
Mrs. Stonehouse, a correspondent for
Belgrave in the Clinton News -Record and
The Huron Expositor, placed second in the
Ontario Community Newspaper Awards for
best correspondent in 1984.
"My grandson has won a lot of hockey
trophies so now I'm going to take my trophy
over to show him," said Mrs. Stonehouse as
she admired her plaque.
She started to write the Belgrave news in
1965 after being asked by Barry Wenger to
submit a weekly Belgrave column to the
Wingham Advance Times. Three years
later, the Brussels Post and the Blyth Stan-
dard also approached her to use the column.
After the two papers amalgamated with
Signal Star Publishing in 1982, she continued
to write the column for the Clinton and
Seaforth papers.
"I started writing the news column just to
see how I would get along and I really en-
joyed it. The people are really good to phone
up and give'me the news," she said.
Mrs. Stonehouse and her husband Lewis
li . cd on a farm in East Wawanosh Township
for 18 years before moving into the village of
Belgrave. They've lived in their Jane St.
home for the past 30 years. She says
Belgrave has basically stayed the same ex-
cept for the new homes built within the last
two years on the south edge of town.
"It's been nice meeting 'the people in
Belgrave. It's wonderful how they bring the
news into us."
"We just think it's a wonderful place to
live. Everybody is friendly and if any trou-
ble comes we're just one big family," said
Mrs. Stonehouse.
She says she intends to keep on writing the
Belgrave column, just as long as she is able
to do it.
