Astilbe cultivars are available in many
height ranges to satisfy your particular
garden needs. In the middle height range of
60 to 75 centimetres (24 to 30 inches), Astilbe
Fire' is aptly named with `Red Sentinel' even
deeper red. The cultivar 'Cologne' is a bright
pink growing to a maximum of 60 cm (24 in. ),
while ' Bressingham Beauty' is a much softer
pink, often growing to 75 to 90 cm (30 to 36
m.) under ideal growing conditions.
`Amethyst', a lilac purple, and 'Ostrich
Plume' a bright pink, feature., pendant spikes
that produce a light airy effect. This cultivar,
and 'Deutschland' a showy white, are now
the most popular cultivars.
The species Astilbe simplicifolia has added
its quota to the range of hybrids. The type is
pretty with graceful pink spikes 38 cm (15 in.
tall, but the cultivar 'atrorosea' is the most
superb, carrying sheaves of tiny, bright -pink
flowers. `Sprite' a darkly -leaved plant,
produces sprays carrying myriads of tiny,
p: a shell -pink flowers 30 cm (12 in.) hi*h.
Another adaptable species worth mention-
ing is Astilbe sinensis pumi1 (creeping
astilbe). As the name suggests it has a
creeping habit of fresh, crispy leaves dose to
the ground and 30 cm (12 in.) flower spikes of
lilac -rose color. Plants of this species are less
fussy about moisture condition than most.
Moisture requirements of astilbe are not
critical enough to scare anyone from growing
them. Plants grown in a rich soil and mulched
annually thrive well. Foliage and flowers lose
their effectiveness only if they are not
watered during severe droughts. Dormant
plants may be divided when young or old
without much difficulty.
Plant several clumps of astilbe this spring,
and enjoy their beauty in your perennial
garden for years to come.
