Seaforth family redo home
Imagine having to almost completely
refurb°4h a large house, with only a small
handful of people to help you.
If that seems like a difficult task, imagine
you've been given about eight months to
finish all the work.
The prospect didn't seem daunting to
Mary and Arno Koskela. They took on just
such a challenge last August, when they
purchased a partially -completed house on
118 Goderich Street in Seaforth. Their work
on the house is almost finished, but they still
have some left to do.
When they first took possission of the
house, the Koskelas reasoned it would be a
wise move to complete as much of the
exterior work as possible while the warm
weather held.
The first work they did was on the garage.
It had only been partially finished by the
previous owners. The Koskela family first
polished off the remaining work on the
garage, then proceeded to construct a
16 -by -40 -square -foot deck on top of it. They
also added a curving concrete staircase
leading up to the front door.
The window design was substantially
altered as part of the renovation job. large
bay windows were installed on the front wall
of the house. One let light into the living
room. The other looked out from the den.
The bay windows were not the only ones
installed, however. The Koskelas also put
four new windows of the more conventional
variety in other rooms of the building.
For the exterior walls, the Koskelas
decided on a modified version of the
Elizabethan half-timbered effect. The look

was somewhat updated so as to look suitably
modern and compliment other architectural
details of the exterior.
To achieve the half-timbered look, the
family put cream -colored stucco board
between one -by -six-inch black timbers.
At this point, the house looked quite
presentable from the outside. The interior
was another matter entirely.
The drywall work was only partially
finished, and the Koskelas went through
over 220 kilograms of drywall material to
complete the walls and ceilings, which
amounted to about 9150 square feet.
After that, of course, there was still
painting to be done. That took about 30
gallons of paint.
The upstairs bathroom had to be built
from scratch, and there was a great deal of
work necessary in remodelling the down-
stairs facility. In addition to the two
bathrooms, the work on the interior included
carpeting the upstairs floors, rebuilding the
staircase from the first to the second floor
and fixing the stairs leading down into the
basement.
