displays some of his plants that are already beginning to grow at the beginning of April.
JJyishinterest turns
into fulitime hobby
Ever since he was a boy in England Harold
Beakhust has been interested in horticulture.
And, now, after living in Canada for nine
years Mr. Beakhust is the president of the
Bayfield Garden Club.
Because of his extensive interest in
horticulture. Mr. Beakhust admits he grows
anything and even raises, his own bedding
. plants. But, because he has only been in
Canada a short time runs. an english style
garden.
As proof of his interest Beakhust has
set up in his basement a me od of speeding
up the germination process in plants. In a
contraption he calls an "Advanced Propaga-
tor", which is a cardboard box, slit up one
side and with a hole in the middle placed on
top of his water heater and formed around the
pipe encasing the tube, Mr. Beakhust has
placed several seeds and herbs on a cloth
covered plate. If the seeds or herbs are kept
constantly moist Mr. Beakhust says germina-
tion should take place within eight or nine
days. The seeds can then be put into small
pots of seeding compound such as peat moss,
sand and vermiculite. "It makes a kind of
cardboard cupboard. The plants should then
!begin to grow, cutting down on the time taken
for normal garden germination," he says.
Mr. Beakhust adds that he has come to the
conclusion that it takes seeds longer to
germinate when the temperatures are hot
during the day and cold at night. He says he
has had great success with his advanced
propagator and has shared his knowledge
with many of his garden club associates.
