Gaol two nice for hobos
April 15, 1884
About the beginning of the war between
England and the United States, in 1812, Dr.
Eustis, Secretary of War, said in Congress: -
"We can take the Canadas without soldiers;
we have only to send officers into the pro-
vinces and the people, disaffected towards
their own government, will rally round our
standard." The Ontario half-breed papers
seem to have educated Riel up to a belief
that he would only have to organize a force
of undisciplined semi -savages and show
them in the North-west, when the people of
the older provinces, in the words of Dr.
Eustis and the Grit press, being "so disaf-
fected towards their own government"
would rally around the rebel standard.
There was a slight mis-calculation on both
occasions.

Two hobos who gave Montreal as their
place of abode and their names as Thomas
Graham and John Gibson made free with
Grand Trunk property at the diamond on
Sunday evening last and were locked up by
Chief Wheatley. Pending the arrival of the
Chief, Alex. Mitchell, the freight agent, held
the hobos by fear of his revolver, with which
he "covered" them. The itinerants spent the
night in the cooler and the next a.m. the
p.m. sentenced them to 30 days in Castle.
Griffin and Sergeant Welsh escorted them
thither by first train.
For confirmed hobos a county gaol is too
easy and comfortable a lodging place.
The Huron County Live Stock and Seed
Show held in Clinton on Thursday last
brought exhibitors and visitors from all
parts of the county and was a splendid suc-
•
cess. That it was so was in no small measure
due to the efforts of the energetic Secretary,
Mr. C.E. Dowding, who was untiring in pro-
moting its interests.
The worthy Prseident, Mr. James Snell,
was also indefatiguable and to one was bet-
ter pleased at the successful outcome than
he was.

Mayor W. S. R. Holmes was in Wingham
Monday taking part in a radio broadcast,
with the mayors of Wingham, Seaforth and
Goderich. Mayor Holmes spoke of the pro-
blem of mayors of towns such as Clinton. At
the conclusion of the broadcast Mayor Han-
na of Wingham entertained the visitors to
luncheon at the Brunswick Hotel. Several
citizens tuned in to hear the mayor's broad-
cast, and all agree that he did will.
In Friday's London Free Press appeared
the pictures of students, four of them, who
were successful in winning the prizes for
proficiency in the French language in a re-
cent contest. Amongst these was Miss
Margaret Plurnsteel, youngest daughtegr of
Mr. and Mrs. W.J. Plumsteel of Clinton.
With the students appeared the donor of the
prizes, Sir Charles Saunders of Ottawa, who
is a native of London. Sir Charles will be bet-
ter known to the majority of people as Dr.
Chas. Saunders, developer of Marquis
wheat. •

lege, has been hired by the Clinton Public
School board for the term commencing in
September. Mr. McKay is a native of Clin-
ton. He began teaching after Grade 12 at
Cr)CT and tanaht for two vParc HP has

Two motions were passed without com-
ment by Clinton Town Council on Monday
night, requesting the establishment of liquor
and beer stores in town. Both were spon-
sored by Councillors G. Rumball and N.
Livermore.
The Brewers Warehousing Company will
be petitioned to establish a store here for the
sale of beer, and the Ontario Liquor Control
Board will be petitioned to establish a store
here for the sale of liquor.
This action follows the vote of April 23,
when Clinton voters favored establishment
of these stores, with a vote of 1,131 "Yes"
and 345 "No".

A freak April snowstorm, described as the
worst April storm in 53 years, slammed into
the area last week, catching most people off
guard and dumping between 12 and 18 in-
ches of snow on the area.
High winds on Thursday and Friday whip-
ped the snow into 10 foot drifts in some
places. closing roads and keeping students
out of school for two days.
Huron County's first indoor public swim-
ming pool is now open.
On Saturday evening April 5, recreation
directors and recreation committee
members from many Huron County
municipalities attended an open swim at the
Vanastra Recreation Centre, followed by a
wine and cheese party.
During the swim period, Elgin Thomspon
was the only swimmer in a business suit!
Comments were favorable and the water
comfortable. You could almost forged the
April snow.
Kevin (left) and Bert Eckert dug into their spaghetti supper at the Clinton Legion on
April 12. The event was hosted by the Clinton and District Scouting Movement, with pro-
ceeds helping to pay for a one day trip to the Canadian Jamboree to be held in Guelph.
