BLYTH - Opera. The word conjures up vi-
sions of great theatres, elaborate produc-
tions and long winded musical tragedies
that appeal to a small segment of the
world's music fans.
Opera is perhaps one of the most
misunderstood forms of music. It is
stereotyped as boring and hard to follow. In
recent years however, opera stars like Lu-
ciano Pavorotti, Beverly Sills and Placido
Domingo, have brought opera to the
masses. More and more people are learning
about this special form of music.
Huron County also has its own opera star
and she is bringing her exceptional talents
to the Blyth Memorial Hall on Sunday, April
21 for an afternoon concert.
Renee Stalenhoef Van Haarlem has per-
formed in theatres throughout Europe, in
Canada and the United States. She sang at
the opera house in Holland for 12 years and
took part in more than 800 performances in
France, Germany and Holland. She sang the
soprano role in the preview concerts for the
Canadian Opera Company production Anna
Bolena, and understudied for Dame Joan
Sutherland in the main production.
Today Renee makes her home north of
Auburn on a dairy farm with her husband
Walter. The couple have been married four
years and are expecting their first child this
summer.
Renee has lived a glamorous, interna-
tional life as a premier Dutch songstress.
Today she chooses a rural lifestyle in
Canada. The pace here may be slower than
Renee was accustomed to during her years
on the stage, but it's no less productive or
dull.•
"Farm life is busy and concentrated. It's
amazing how occupied you are with book-
keeping to stay well informed on the farm"
a noted.
Renee is still pursuing her career but at
ter own pace. She manages to combine life
o;1 the farm and life on the stage, and is anx-
iously awaiting to include life as a mother.
"The baby changes everything again. But
what's life worth, but bringing your own
• flesh and blood into the world."
Still the change in lifestyle seems so
drastic. Renee agrees, but she's happy.
"When you've done that much work for a
long period of time, you,need a change...I've'
had such beautiful experiences, glamor in
:Holland, but after a while, it's not impor-
tant. Now I want the very basics of life."
Renee and Walter honeymooned in
Canada in 1981. Walter had worked in
Canada 10 years earlier and the Niagara
Falls vacation confirmed that this was the
• country where they wanted to live.
' "He saw the new world here," Renee ex-
plained of her husband's desire to live in
Canada.
While the opera houses of.:Europe may be
thousands of miles away,Renee has not
abandoned her singing career. She still has
a busy schedule and now finds the time to
"refill her battery."

on April 21, Renee hopes to convey her love
for classical music and create a greater au-
dience appreciation for this type of music.
She will sing a concert of mixed songs by
Schubert, Rossini, Poulenc and Leonard
Bernstein and will be accompanied by
pianist Marion Miller and flautist Fiona
Wilkinson, both of London,.
Renee and her musicians stress that the
concert is designed to appeal of people of all
musical tastes. -
Renee describes the concerts as a "spring
show. A lyrical show when everything starts
to blossom again."
"Opera has nothing to do with this show,"
she stressed. "There's only one opera aria.
The others are classical songs."
And what of the language barriers? Renee
speaks and sings in six languages - Dutch,
English, German, French, Spanish and
Italian.
The key to understanding and ap-
preciating the music is to go beyond the
words - to feel the emotional impact of the
song.
Renee uses her operatic strength to in-
fluence the music and communicate a com-
plete story to the audience. Through timing
voice tone, volume and expression she emir
municates a musical message.,
"Music comes out of an iron box
nowadays. People who express themselves
are becoming rare," she noted.
The voice, Renee explains, is a musical in-
strument, "You must learn how to mold the
body and voice together. There should be
the right connection between the body and
the sound."
As a trio, Renee, Marion and Fiona have
worked to create a "light and beautiful per-
formance," Renee described. The songs are
about love - love lost and won. The perfor-
mance promises to offer a wide range of
musical emotions, uplifting and moving,
humorous and lighthearted.
The concert has been in the works for just
over a year. In that time the three per-
formers have worked together to become at-
tuned to the music and their emotional
response to it. Fiona describes the rehearsal
process as "intimate."
Marion and Fiona use their instruments to
illustrate the emotions of the music,
together the trio combines talents to create
an ensemble presentation.
Marion and Fiona are accomplished mus'
cians. They teach music at the University
Western Ontario. As well, Marion is a
keyboard plalyer with the London .Sym-.
phonia and Fiona performs with the London
Concert Players.
As a trio, Renee, Marion and Fiona plan to
;,resent an eclectic program in Blyth, one
that will appeal to a new audience.
The concert will take place on Sunday,
April 21 at 2 p.m. Tickets are on sale at the
Blyth Box Office or can be reserved by call-
ing 523-9300 or 523-9225.
