CLINTON - If your child is interested in
studying dance, a special 10 week program
being offered in Clinton will provide an ex-
cellent introduction. Dupee and
Two area young women, Marg p
Jayne Snell will be teaching a 10 week pro-
gram of ballet basics and modern dance.
The course will be held twice a week and
will provide 20 hours ofdistructio . Classes
will be held Tuesday anThursday
from April 30 to July 4 at the Clinton Town
Hall Auditorium.
Marg and Jayne, dance students at the
university of Waterloo, are offering the
ce program for fun, and "to give
children a taste of structured, disciplined
dance program," Marg explained.
Currently no dance programs are offered
in Clinton. Marg hopes that this initial 10
week course program will develop into
fulltime dance classes in future years.
Marg and Jayne have worked with
children in dance through their university
studies. Their university work will help
them develop the 10 week program.
Jayne has seven years of ballet in-
struction from Mrs. Zablocki of Clinton and
Marg has worked with children as a figure
skating coach in the area. Marg says that
with their expertise, "the combination
should work well."
No experience is needed for children to
take part in the Clinton course. The pro-
gram will teach the basics of ballet on Tues-
day nights and the free moving, imaginative
modern dance style at the Thursday evening
classes. Classes are an hour long.
Ballet classes will offer a disciplined form
of study. Basic steps will be learned and
development of good posture and body posi-
tioning will be stressed.
Modern dance classes will allow students
develop their own creativity. Dance se-
quences will be developed into original
numbers.
Marg noted that younger children are par-
ticularly receptive to modern dance
because they have fewer problems with self
consciousness.
Children of all ages. are invited to take
part. For younger children, the classes help
to develop their motor skills. Older children
will have the opportunity to learn what
ballet and modern dance are all about.
The course can accommodate 60 children,
but Marg noted, "If we have 10 kids, we'll
run it with 10 kids."
Participants will be divided into age
groups and classes will run according to the
age categories. As many as four classes per
night can be offered to. adequately accom-
hiodate a large number of students and a
wide range of ages.
Cost.to take the 10 week program is $60,

CLINTON - April 13 - 20 is the 7th annual
NationalBook Festival. This week is set
aside each year to help promote awareness
of Canadian writers and publishers.
Canadians are fortunate to have a wide
variety of books and magazines to choose
from; .books written by Canadians, about
Canadians, set in Canadian towns and cities.
Magazines dealing with Canadian issues,
sponsored by Canadian advertisers.
It is hoped that the National Book Festival
will encourage, people to consider Canadian
publications when they are buying or bor-
rowing books and magazines.
The Clinton Branch Library has a large
selection of Canadian authors and
magazines. Librarians hope that you will
help to celebrate the National Book Festival
by reading a Canadian book. Why not re-
read a `classic' or try an author that is new
to you. Please feel free to come in and
browse.

modern dance program for area children. Registration will be held on April 21 at the
Clinton Town Hall. (Shelley McPhee photo)
which averages out to $3 an hour for the 20
hours of instruction. 4 ,
"We consider it reasonable in comparison
to other dance schools," Marg noted.
"Piano lessons or step dancing cost that
much."
Students must wear ballet slippers, which
cost between $6 and $15 and a body suit and
tights is recommended as dance apparel.
Marg said that for ballet, the traditional
ballet outfit is preferred, but dress flexibili-
ty is allowed because the .program is only
being offered for 10 weeks.
The 10 week program has been designed
to avoid conflicts with the prince summer
holiday time. Classes end on July 4, A
recital will be held at the end of the course to
show off the young new dance talents in
Clinton.
Registration for the course will be held on
Saturday, April 21 from 1 to 4 p.m. at the.
Clinton Town Hall. For more information,
contact the Clinton Recreation Office at 482-

Marg and Jayne are hoping for a good
response. Already some ' parents and
children have shown interest. Classes will
' be geared for children from five to 13 -years
old. If enough interest is shown, classes will

also be set-up for 14 to 19 -years olds.
Developing the program comes after
more than a year of consideration by the two
university room mates. They feel that dance
classes should be offered locally. As well,
theinstruction aspect will be a positive'addi-
tion to Marg and Jayne's resume.
Marg has studied dance and figure
skating for several years. She is studying se-
cond year dance at university, and is major-
ing in kinetics. She plans to write her fourth
year thesis on human movement and dance.
Marg's dance studies involve about eight
hours a week. She noted, "People think I
dance all day long. last term I also studied
math and computer science. We have to do
as many studies as others and we also have
eight hours of dance to fit in."
Jayne has also been a dance' student for
many years. She studies business at univer-
sity and also takes second year dance. The
university dance program was developed
five years ago.
Through their expertise in dance, their,
work with childrenp, and their interest and
enthusiasm to bring ballet and modern
dance back to Clinton, Marg and Jayne are
well qualified for the job. '
