W'I celebrate 80th birthday
CLINTON - Almost 100 people sat down to
a beef banquet in the Ontario Street United
Church Hall on March 27 to celebrate the
Clinton W.I. 80th anniversary. The tables
were decorated in the Women's Institute
colors of gold and blue, and the head table
was centered with a large bowl of yellow
mums and shasta daisies. A display of WI
memorabilia, including the Vol. I of
Tweedsmuir history, pictures of special
branch events, and an autograph quilt made
by Clinton branch ladies in 1923 was set up in
the hall. An 80th birthday scroll from the On-
tario government was also on display.
President of the Clinton branch, Mrs.
Cecil Elliott welcomed all present.Mrs. Bert
Sootheran introduced the head table guests.
Greetings were extended by Mayor Chester
Archibald on behalf of the Town of Clinton;
by Mary Ann Yaromich Rural Organization
Specialist; President of the District of
Huron West, Mrs. Les Jacklin of Wingham;
from the Federated Women's Institutes of
Ontario by Mrs. J. Templeman, Board
Member, from Staffa.
Three past presidents, Leona Holland,
lland,
Viola Nelson, and Doris Batkin, took part in
the cake -cutting ceremony.
Mrs. Batkin, curator of the Clinton branch
gave some highlights of the Clinton
Women's Institute over the past 80 years.
Special music oh the harp was played by
Mary Hearn. One minute silence was
observed in memory of departed members.
Mrs. Nelson and Mrs. Ratkin W.I. members
for over 40 years were honored by their
branch in receiving Life Membership Cer-
tificate and •pin, the ceremony being con -
.ducted by Mrs. Mabel Jacklin, President, of
Huron West District.
Mrs. Elliott introduced the guest speaker,
Mrs. Marcie (Sam) Johnston, Secretary of
the Federated Women's Institutes of On-
tario. Mrs. Johnston is a graduate of the
University of Western Ontario, who is the
wife of a dairy farmer living at Britton
(near Listowel). They farm 600 acres of
land, and milk 45 dairy cows. Her message
was an inspiration and a challenge to all
women. She stressed the need for thin.)cf ng
young, and keeping modern, and said that
every woman needs a microwave oven in.
their kitchen; stressed the need for more
education in' the area .of sexual abusein
children, and wife abuse, and.other modern-
day concerns.
She had taught a course lass1 year on Child
Care and Babysitting, in Perth County. She
stressed that women are learning "to be
leaders". They have to share the load on the
farm, and in every facet of today's. society.
Resolutions are needful, and women have to
make themselves heard.
As this is the "Year of the Youth", take
down the barrier in our minds, forget ones
age and try to understand and help our
youth. She said, "Women's Institute
members are a group of women who try to
speak out, and do something about issues
that disturb them, a group of volunteers who
do things without being paid."
Mrs. Johnston received a standing ovation
for her excellent talk. Courtesies were ex-
tended to the group of United Church
Women who served the meal; to all who
assisted withothe planning of the program;
to Mrs. Hearn for rendering the music, and
to all those who had come from other bran-
ches in the District to help celebrate the
memorable occasion.
Lorna Radford, a pianist within the
branch for many years, played piano ac-
companiment for the opening and closing of
the meeting. •
