Clinton News-Record, 1985-4-10, Page 6Ferraro against more acid gain study
'By Stephanie Levesque
Acid rain needs to be stopped not studied
to death says Geraldine Ferraro, the first
woman to be nominated for vice-president
in the United States.
Ms. Ferraro was the guest speaker at the
$150 -a -plate Liberal fund raising dinner held
in London on March 26.
"Acid rain is being studied to death — to
the death of our forests, our lakes, our soil.
It does not need to be studied further. It
needs to be stopped," she said.
The American Democrat said the North
American problem needs a solution made
by the entire continent.
"I support the negotiation of a fair treaty
between Canada and the United States to ad-
dress this problem, and I also favor a pro-
gram in my own country to match the Cana-
dian commitment and reduce by one hall
the American emissions that cause acid rain
over the next 10 years."
Acid rain was not the only item of concern
on Ms. Ferraro's mind. She also talked
about the American deficit, trade and arms
control.
While she said she is pleased that Presi-
dent Ronald Reagan has reopened arms
control discussions with the Soviets, she is
worried that the Reagan administration's
refusal to stop research on Star Wars during
negotiations and to not discuss Star Wars in
Early files - Riel revolution.
negotiations will result in unsuccessful
talks.
"Now it is possible that a formula can be
found to get around this apparent conflict...
But if it turns out that by refusing to
negotiate on Star Wars, which in my opinion
is a very questionable and perhaps impossi-
ble plan, the administration blocks progress
on arms control for another four years, this
would be a very serious blow to the cause of
peace and security of NATO countries.
"I deeply hope that whether with Star
Wars or without it, the Reagan administra-
tion pursues an arms control agreement
with singleminded devotion. If they do, that
effort will deserve and receive the support
of Americans f rom both political parties."
On trade, Ms. Ferraro said the United
States should become more competitive in
the world, economy, rather than protecting
its borders from other countries who want to
trade with the U.S.
"I do not think the answer to trade pro-
blems lies in protection. But neither do 1
think that the United States can for long
keep its doors open to nations that close
their markets to us," she said.
The former vice-presidential candidate
said the consensus in Washington is that the
deficit has to come down, even if that means
restraining spending in all areas, including
defense, and possibly raising taxes.

Riel could not enlist so many of there under
his banner, overlook the fact that his Cham-

to that of the cowardly yet ferocious tiger.
He will toy with the half-breeds, as a cat

jaws of avenging justice.

"Unfortunately in my country it is easier
to win votes by attacking welfare than by
facing reality. And for a long time that is
what politicians did," said Ms. Ferraro.
The American politician received the
most applause from the Canadian Liberals,
particularly women when she talked about
the reaction in her country to the first
woman vice-presidential candidate.
"On the whole in the United States we
already think of ourselves as a fair and open
society. And so no one really expected to be
touched by this sort of a decision. But, much
to their surprise, millions of Americans
.were.
"Now I knew that all these people, and
many more, were not moved by Geraldine
Ferraro. Many women could have done
what I did. I was allowed to stand in for
millions of American women. In fact, that's
what made it so hard forme. I knew that
many were watching me. Most people were
rooting for me. And I didn't want to let them
down."
Although the Walter Mondale-Ferraro
ticket did not win in the United States
presidential campaign, Ms. Ferraro said
horizons for women were lengthened, which
was a win for women.
There were about 450 Ontario Liberals to
hear Ms. Ferraro and Ontario Liberal
leader David Peterson.

Here are some games which can be played
inside during the cold winter months, or rainy
summer days. These games can be played with a
friend after school or at a party. If the games are
p1a'yed at a party, you may want to change them
a bit. .
1. Guess the number:
Fill a jar with anything small, such as buttons,
pennies, or candies, and have everyone guess how
mask things are in the jar. The person closest to
the correct number could win the jar of goodies.
2. Guess the sounds:
Hang a sheet over a doorway and make differ-
ent sounds behind the sheet with various objects,
such as scissors snapping. a broom sweeping, or
a padlock opening and shutting. Have, everyone
try and guess what the sounds are.
11, Guess the liquid: .
Fill some paper cups with different liquids,
such as orange juice soft drinks, or coffee, put a
lid on the cups, and have everyone try and guess
the contents after taking one small sip through a
straw.
