bus drivers' records clean
By Anne Na>re1k0
"You have to like children in this job,"
says Walter Pepper of Clinton. Mr. Pepper
has been a bus driver 'for 10 years; and
although he is over the retirement age. he
continues to carry the responsibilities of
transporting 55 children to and from school
each school day.
Since bus drivers have such a great
responsibility, it is necessary for them to be
tested on a regular basis. Those who are
over 65 -years -old, must take a written test
given by the Ministry of Transportation and
Communications. Other drivers are tested
every three years.
These tests May attribute to the good
driving record held by bus drivers across
the province. According to Barry Young,
Manager of Murphy Bus Lines, "statistics
show that buses ,are the safest
transportation in Ontario." Murphy Bus
Lines helps uphold this statistic with no
accidents in 1984, however, a bus was in an
accident his year but none of the passengers
were injured.
Mr, Young explained that to become a bus
driver a person first must pass a medical
given by a Elnntor. The send cten is to pass
a written road driving test and a
driving course.
"The safe driving course teaches drivers
everything that has to do with driving,
driving
looking after the kids and what type of
thingatolook for," explained Mr. Young,
Weather conditions affect bus drivers
the same way they affect all other drives ff
the visibility is poor or the road conditions
are dangerous, the buses are cancelled.
If a driver does happen to get into an
accident and it is found that he is at fault,
the penalties that apply to drivers of other
vehicles will also apply to him. On the
average, Mr. Young says that a driver will
cover approximately 50 miles a day.
Mr. Pepper feels that the most important
part of the job is to "stay alert and keep your
eyes open at all times." As for the children,
"most of them are pretty good. There's one
or two that have to be kept in line because if
you let them go too far, they get out of hand.
You have to be firm with them."
"I enjoy the job because there are some
cute kids and I like getting out through the
country," commented Mr. Pepper. "But you
really do have to like children."
