Is there a girl anywhere who; isn't flat-
tered when asked to serve as a bridesmaid. .
Even as satellite to the bride beauti[U1, it's
a romantic, exciting role to play - and if
nothing else, a good reason for buying a fan-
cy dress.
Beyond adding color and background to
the nupl:ial rites and dancing at the recep-
tion, the perfect bridesmaid has important
:duties to perform prior to, and during, the
wedding.
You'll be expected to take part in pre -
wedding social functions and attend a
shower or two. And while, the naaid or maid
of honor takes the major responsibility for
assisting the bride on the wedding day, you
and the other bridesmaids should be dressed
at least an hour before the ceremony, and on
hand to relieve them of unnecessary details.
Of all the attendants, the job of chief assis-
tant falls to the maid of honor. She has many
a duty, and may delegate several of these to
any of the bridesmaids. So be ready to help
out as needed in the following ways:
Double check all things needed for the
honeymoon, making sure they are at the site
of the reception; help the bride with dress-
ing, packing; help bride into her going away
clothes and assist in carefully putting away
her wedding gown, see that 'the an

Help to direct bridesmaids, being sure
they are aware of fitting appointments,
rehearsal obligations, their special duties:
On wedding day, arrive at brides home
early to help her with dressing; check that
bridemaids carry bouquets correctly; check
with best man to be sure ushers fully
understand their responsibilities; remind
best man which guests will be wearing cor-
sages,.r (mothers, grandmothers, etc.) so
they are not seated before receiving their
flowers.
Hold bridal bouquet at the right time dur-
ing the ceremony and hand it back just
before the recessional; witness and sign
marriage certificate.
In the case of a double ring ceremony,
maid of honor keeps charge of groom's ring
until needed by the bride.
Of course, she helps the bride change into
her going away clothes and takes charge of
packing the bridal gown for delivery home
or to the cleaners.

Bridesmaids dresses have come a long way from the days of insipid pastel chiffon and draped
jersey gowns where styling came second to subtlety. The romantic trend is making a welcome
splash in the dresses for bridesmaids and ruffled taffetas, rosebud patterned voiles and demure
Southern belle styles with deeply flounced necklines and full skirts are options with a longer
fashion lifespan. (Photo by Colleen Maguire) photography)
