Convenience important in chinaware
Many of today's brides are working
women with busy schedules, and they can't
afford to waste time with planning home
entertaining. That is why so many
newlyweds are looking for convenience and
design when selecting china for casual and
everyday dining.
According to Alice Kolator, national
tabletop consultant, Lenox China and
Crystal, "Style -conscious brides are choos-
ing casual china with a contemporary
design that allows them to create different
tablesetting looks by adding accessories
such as colorful placements and napkins.
"Also, they. are looking for functional
benefits that help make home entertaining
more convenient and less time-consuming."
A new line of quality casual dinnerware,
"Lenox Chinastone," has design flexibility
offering four innovative patterns in three
fashionable color collections that can create
a variety of looks for casual dining. •
It also has the added benefits of being
oven -to -table and microwave safe, and
stackable for compact storage — a plus for
newlyweds living in smaller apartments
and homes.
Ms. Kolator encourages newlyweds to be
creative with their tablesettiugs, whether it
is a casual breakfakt for two or a dinner par-
ty for eight. She suggests:
Experiment by combining a pat-
terns within a place setting. For example,
use a solid border salad plate with a floral
design dinner platee.
Select different patterned napkins that
contrast with your tablecloth, such as
striped napkins with floral cloths. In place
of napkin rings, tie knots in the center of
each napkin.
0 Dress up your table with items that you
mayy traditionally use as home accessories,
such as wicker baskets or ceramic pitchers.
Design a total environment by color -
coordinating tablesetting accessories to the
decor of your dining room or kitchen. China,
table linens, runners and centerpieces can
accent the colors in your wallpaper, window
treatments and furniture.
Mothers are more fashion conscious
The single biggest difference between to-
day's mothers of the bride and groom and
their yesteryear counterparts is, the fact
that they are infinitely more fashion con-
scious, slimmer and younger looking than
before.
Designers and manufacturers of bridal
wear have finally realized that there is a
need for attractive, appropriate garments
for members of the wedding party - besides
the bride. Selections in Metro stores are
much better than in previous years. This
year's favourite colours are the romantic
shades of mauve, violet, hyacinth, dusty
rose, peach, pale gray, cobalt and
aubergine.
Many mothers prefer either two piece
gowns or dresses with cover up jackets or
sheer overblouses that tend to camouflage a
thickening waist (one of the few figure pro-
blems mothers of the bride and groom may
have).
They're following the brides and are
selecting long dresses in preference to
short.
The dresses are more formal than they us-
ed to be, often trimmed with embroidery,
qty
beading, lace or ruffles. Favourite fabrics
are taffeta, silk, matte satin, moire and silk
with a chiffon overlayer.
Many mothers choose dresses they will be
able to wear to other formal events. If these
are low cut or particularly ornate, it's essen-
tial that they have a cover up jacket,
capelet, or blouson, since it's inappropriate
to wear a very decollete or glittery gown to a
wedding:
There are, of course, a number of dos and
don'ts for the mother of the bride or groom.
She should select long sleeves, which are
more flattering to older arms, and
preferably a high neckline. She should avoid
overly bright or harsh colours, and never
select strong prints. Mothers should also
consider the rest of the bridal party before
making a final decision to make sure that
their selection is compatible with other col-
ours.
It's a good idea to get professional advice
on hair and makeup, even for women unac-
customed to having their hair and makeup
professionally done, since the single biggest
mistake mothers tend to make is to sudden-
ly go overboard.
