Soft colours flatter mothers
For mothers and soon to; be mothers -in
law of bluStingbrides, a'gown this
season will be easy.
Soft pastels of mauve, pink, gray and blue
in delicate chiffons and finely woven knits
guarantee a perfectly turned out mom at the
wedding. Try to choose a dress in a soft col-
our,
olour, as bolder, bright shades often upstage
the bride and are not as flattering to mature
women.
If you're planning to spend a large sum of
money orithe dress, go for a seasonless style
and colour soyou can be assured of having
an opportunity to wear it again. A long
sleeved jacket over a bar dress is another
way to get extra mileage.
Select either a long gown or cocktail
length, depending on the size and formality
of the wedding. If the bride is going tradi-
tional, it's perfectly acceptable for the

Iength dresses, regardless of the s#ze of the
gpest last, If you Won't have many oppor-
tunities to wear a long gawp after the wed`
ding, it can usually be shortened into .4
cocktail dress.
Although sequins and rbinestoues.are not
the order of the day, clever, new ornamenta-
tion an dresses, such as braiding, quilted
trims and ruffles, all add a festive touch to
otherwise simple gowns. -
A new look in synthetic -chiffons is. perma-
nent pleating. It has a distinctive designer
look, is easy to care for and, depending on
the style, can be seasonless.
Necklines and sleeve lengths • run the
gamut, so please yourself but don't bare too
much. It's best to consult with the bride if
you're unsure about colour or detail. After
all, it's her day.

fabrics, fashionable silhouettes, and atten-
tion to detail."
Fashion freedom
The popularity of the tea -length bridal
dress among career brides shopping in the
JCPenney Bridal Salons demonstrates a
preference for the high-stepping fashion
freedom of the 1920s when hems went up and
up and up.
Women exulted in a new joie de vivre with
classic gown high in front and trailing in
back. Necklines plunged in the back but rose
demurely high across the throat.
And some of these touches are found in
current bridal collections along with more
variety in length than in many a season.
Even veils are offered in varying lengths.
Short on the sides and incrediby full and
romantic in back in order to cascade down
the back.
Other trends attributed to brides in their
late 20s and 30s are a 'preference for ivory
and -oyster over pure white, and the selec-
tion .of attendants' dresses that are also
high -styled.
Retailers and the bridal magazines agree
that the spring and summer of 1985 will see a
large number off carefullyorchestrated wed-
dings — and at many of these the focus will
be the executive bride.
Census figures for 1982 show a record 2.5
million marriages which.is a 16 per cent in-
crease over 1975. They also indicate the first
decline in the divorce pattern in 20- years:
1.2 million.
The number of divorces continued to
decline in '83 and the trend is holding for '84.
Experts feel the increasing age and
thoughtfulness of brides and their grooms is
a major contributing factor.
In a recent Reader's Digest/Gallup
Survey, 85 percent of those polled (1,549
adults over 18 in 300 communities), respond-
ed "yes" when asked if they would wed the
same person if they could make the decision
again!
Brides who are confident, self-assured
and poised can still be "blushing brides."
Mrs. Lalli of Modern Bride stresses,
"Nothing has been taken away. If anything,
the bride with her career hi full -swing and
with a certain maturity has access to yet
another dimension of creating the perfect
wedding and a wonderful memory for this
most important of days."
