indicate
`election
readiness
More than 250 Huron -Middlesex Provin-
cial Liberals attended a dinner and dance in
Parkhill on Feb. 23 and indicated they were
raring to get into action for the next elec-
tion.
Speaking to the enthusiastic gathering
were Ontario Liberal leader David Peterson
and MPP Jack Riddell who has represented
the Huron -Middlesex riding for the past 12
years.
In his remarks Mr. -Peterson compared
the present Conservative government led by
Premier Frank Miller and one he hoped to
head following the next election.
He was concerned that Mr. Miller would
be cutting back on social services especially
. for small town hospitals. In the same vein
the Liberal leader said those wishing to
enter hospitals for surgery have ,been
waiting as long as six months.
Mr. Peterson called for more • job skill
training and greater assistance for.
agriculture.
He continued, "Our farmers need help to
stay in business with higher prices for their
products and rower interest on loans needed
to operate."
Jack Riddell said he was concerned with.
Prime Minister Brian Mulroney's open door
policy to the United States. He added, "Too
much foreign investment could return us to
branch plant problems and create a
downturn in the economy."
"A free trade route with the United States
could damage Ontario industry and
especially our, agnicultural marketing
boards," added the local MPP.
Middlesex Warden Bill Lane of Dor-
chester paid tribute to Mr. Riddell for his ef-
forts in trying to restore the Middlesex coun-
ty jail and attempting to obtain more beds
for Strathroy hospital.
Also in attendance was Don Smith, the
newly • elected president of the Ontario
Liberal Party. His wife Joan will be oppos-
ing MPP Gordon Walker in the riding of
London South in the next election.
•Riding president Joe Hogan was master of
ceremonies for the dinner which was follow=
• ed,by dancing to Maple Sugar.

I1l Scott on egg board
VARNA - Huron County egg producers
have re-elected Bill Scott of Seaforth to
represent them on the Ontario Egg Board.
Mr. Scott, a Board director since 1977, is
Ontario's representative on the Canadian
Egg Marketing Agency. With his wife Gwen,.
he operates a custom hatchery and breeder
flock in addition to his egg production opera-
tion near Seaforth:
There are 15 producer -elected directors
on the Ontario Egg Board, who are responsi-
ble for the Board's policies and operations.
Thirteen are elected by egg producers in 13
zones or areas of Ontario; two 'are elected
by pullet producers, or those farmers who
raise chicks to egg -laying age.
Egg producers in each zone elect a com-
mittee to elect a director for that zone.
Pullet producers elect committeemen to
vnfP fnr a nnllat nrnrinrer rlirartnr fnr Parh
half of the province.
Producers met in Varna, on February 20
to elect committeemen for Huron County for
1985.
They are: Egg Committeemen: Ralph
Buffinga, Clinton; Marjorie Cartwright,

County, who hold about eight percent of the
province's total hen quota allotment.
Flood potential greater
With the water equivalent represented by
the snow cover being two times greater than
the average, the Ausable-Bayfield Con-
servation Authority (ABCA) is hoping for a
. gradual thaw with only light rainfall.
Alec Scott, Water Resources Co-ordinator
with the ABCA says that the best possible
situation would be "a prolonged period of
mild days where the temperature dips back
below freezing at night with no major
rainstorms." He added that the mild
weather expected over the weekend .of
February 23 wasn't anticipated to cause a
Major snow -melt and runoff. ,
Scott says that the Conservation Authority
has , a better ability to monitor the flood
situation this year as a result ofim-
provements made to its flood monitoring
system. "We have added a compilter com-
munication link with the Provincial
Streamflow Forecasting' Centre and in-
stalled a new water level gauge at Port
Franks. The computer link means we have
quicker access to informations concerning
weather conditions. which could trigger
serious - flooding problems while 'the water
level gauge will enable us to better monitor
water level changes in the Ausable Cut at
Port Franks. •
Last year ice jams at Bayfield and Port
Franks caused flooding problems near the
mouths of the -two rivers. Scott reports that
the ice thickness on the Ausable River at
Port Franks is currently about the same as
last year when the ice jam problems, occur-
red.
If flooding problems appear imminent the
Conservation Authority will. issue a Flood
Advisory or a more serious Flood Warning
to . Member Municipalities who will be af-
fected by the flooding. It then becomes the
Municipality's responsibility to take the
necessary steps to prevent loss of life and
minimize property damage.

Although the Conservation Authority has
an improved flood monitoring system, the
system is not complete yet. Provincial fun-
ding that was supposed to be, provided in
1985 for further improvements has been cut.
Scott says, "this means slower and less ac-
curate warnings of flooding:”
