(James Friel photo) Top students tale speaking awards By Sheron Stadelmann BLYTH Blyth Public School held their public speaking contest on Feb. 21 with - Principal " Bill Black, Janet. Hoonaard; Frances Cook and Damian Soloman doing the judging. . Taking first place in the Gr. 7-8 level was Kim Medd. Lisa Bailey placed second with Lori Leibold and Les Phillips tying for third. In the' Gr. 4-6 level, Tamrm Medd placed first, Kelly Cook finished in second place and Laurie' Wharton .took . third place. Finishing fourth was Sarah Allan. The win- ners of each division will compete against .Hullett School on Feb. 27. Winter Carnival On Feb. 12 students and staff from Gr. 3-8 braved the wet snow and rainto construct snow sculptures. Their sculptures included a ship with .Cartier printed in snow, a throne with Candles, a highway bus, the Loch Ness Monster, a Big Mac, a whale and. a beaver and his lodge. On Feb. 14, Annette Lucas and Scott Cronin were chosen queen and king of the carnival. • That afternoon, each of the 'seven carnival groups found themselves in tough competi- tion in the deep snow. (James Friel photo) WI host card party The Blyth Women's Institute and their guest met in the Blyth .Memorial Hall on Feb. 7 for an afternoon filled with games of euchre, lost heir and Scrabble. They also in- dulged in sampling some delicious desserts. Euchre winners were: high scorers were Dorothy Daer and Rena Watt; low, Betty Kelly and Edgar Howatt; lone hands, Ber- nice McClinchey. Lost heir winners were: high scorers Mildred Anent and Ida Proctor; low scorers, Evelyn Smith and Ferne Howatt. Scrabble winners were: high lady, Agnes Harrower; low lady, Irene Schultz. The next meeting will be held on March 7 at 6:30 p.m. It will be a Sunshine Sisters' Banquet, which is a pot luck meal. Bring a guest to see pictures of Australia which will be shown and -commented on by Ruth Shad- dickand Margaret Taylor. About people and places Mr. and Mrs. Henry Selling of RR 3 Blyth have had their hands full for the past three weeks babysitting their one -year-old grand- son Scott. Scott is staying with his grandparents while his mom and dad, ' Douglas and Heather Seiling, are taking a ,Caribbean. Cruise. They're travelling with Heather's family as part of a special holiday, celebrating her father's 50th birthday. Heather's parents, Mr. and Mrs. Russel Hunter of Toronto have given the trip to Heather and Douglas, Heather's two sisters and their husbands and a younger brother. , In the meantime, young Scott is holiday- ing with his grandparents in Blyth. They .report that their first grandson is a "delightful" house guest "and a real busy body." Douglas, Heather and Scott make Oakville their home where Douglas works with the Bank of Montreal. Heather works with the Kimberly Clarke Paper Co.
