Based on Egyptian tomb paintings from
about 2,000 B.C., it appears the classic sport
o angling with rod, line and hook has been
around for at least 4,000 years — and pro-
bably a lot longer. Although basic technique
has remained largely unchanged, fishing as
a sport and leisure pastime has grown
steadily in popularity and now numbers
some 60 million adherents in 'the United
States alone.
As with any historic (in this case, almost
primeval) sport,, a considerable body of in-
formation has grown up around, and about,
fishing. Until recently, anglers could add to
their knowledge of fish habitat, feeding pat-
terns, fishing technique and the like only
through two basic means: reading, from an
almost limitless store of printed material
about the sport, or doing, in the company of
more knowledgeable anglers.
This has changed, however, thanks to the
electronic age — the era of the home video
cassette recorder. Prices of these machines
have dropped dramatically since their in-
troduction in the 1970s. It is now estimated
that 20 per cent of all Canadian homes have
them and that half the households in the
country will contain VCRs by the end of this

anglers — exciting phenomenon: the
marketing of instructional and entertain-
ing video tapes for home use covering such
subjects as fly fishing, fly tying and trout,
bass, walleye and even muskie fishing
techniques.

Clinton, Blyth and Bayfield Figure '
Skating Clubs teach children of all ages the
basics of skating as well as some of the more
technical aspects of figure skating. Despite
the size difference between the clubs, the
programs are comparable.
Each of the three clubs offer a beginners'
Canskate program which is followed by
Canfigure skate. From Canfigure skate the
skaters go into the club.
The clubs also have professionals who
take the participants through the stages. In

other angling experts, the tapes such as

of the world's best streams and lakes. Each
tape packs an incredible wealth of angling
know-how into a thoroughly entertaining
program.
Titles like "Fly Fishing for Trout",
"Fishing the Dry Fly" and "Tying Trout

information that would otherwise take the
viewer years to acquire. Even the best

reader written words and still photos. Video

through the actual process of fly -tying or

The Canskate program is designed for
people of all ages. A comfortable learning
environment is created by combining
music, games and group instruction.
The objective of the program is to offer an
enjoyable and safe skating program while
developing balance, co-ordination and
rhythm. The program also tries to teach
correct technique in forward and backward

There are eight badges that the skaters
strive for. They start with the beginners'
badge and work up through the elementary,
basic, novice I - IV badges to the proficiency
test. The proficiency badge is the only one
that requires formal testing. .
• Canfigure skate
After the Canskate program is completed,
and the skater shows desire, the next step is
Canfigure skate. This program is basically
a recreational figure skating program
designed for skaters who wish to learn
various areas of figure skating.
Canfigure skate provides 21 badges in five
areas as incentives, The areas are figures,
free skating, stroking, dancing and preci-
sion skating. Each area is broken down into
stages and when the skaters have suc-
cessfully completed the stage, they receive
their badge.

day evening and Saturday morning the trio ,
take 90 members through various routines,
adding a few new steps and spins.
Guy is in his 16th year of teaching, nine of
• which he has spent in Clinton. The Stratford
native was originally involved in hockey but
decided to switch to figure skating "because
there were more girls involved in the
sport."
Brenda took lessons from Guy when she
was in her early stages of figure skating.
She has been skating for 17 years now and is.
in her third year of teaching.
"I guess it was my mom who got me
started. She signed up my sister an rF ;' and
we became . interested in it," Brenda com-
mented. "There was also a little bit of com-
petition between us. If one of us passed, the
other would have to pass too."."
Kim Marsden, of Staffa, has been skating
for 14 years. Fier mother also got her started
in the sport, and because Kim enjoyed it,
she continued and has been teaching for one
year. '
"I really enjoy the teaching. I learn as
much as the skaters do, if not more," she
stated.
The members in the figure skating -club
take, part in a few cornpetitions throughout
the season. In January they travel to Lon-
don and in March they head to Sarnia. There
is an inter -club 'competition held in March'
with other clubs within the •surrounding area
participating.
The biggest annual project is the grand
finale show. Every second year a skating
carnival is held with a special theme. Dress-
ed in costumes, the skaters show. parents
