Guide worth a look
If anyone says there's nothing to do in
Clinton during the early months of the year,
tell them to take a look in the Clinton Winter
Recreation Guide. Not only 'will they find
plenty of activities, but they will also come
across some useful information.
When most people think about recreation,
sports such as hockey, baseball, tennis or
badminton come to mind. But recreation is
much more than that.
The dictionary defines recreation as any
form of play, amusement or relaxation
intended to refresh the body or mind,
especially after work. It also says that
walking, gardening and reading are quiet
forms off recreation.
Clinton offers the quiet forms of
recreation as well as the activities which
require more exertion, providing something
for residents of all ages and exercise
preferences.
For those who like competition, there are
hockey leagues, shinny hockey, and
badminton. The recreation committee, in
conjunction with the Clinton Golden Radar
Club, is also offering weekly afternoon
euchre for those who like competition that
doesn't involve too much physicalexertion.
Those that like to combine music with
exercise can take part in figure skating or
an afternoon or evening Trim -A -Size
program.
Specal programs for children include
youth gymnastics which gives both group
and individual instruction on the balance
beam, vault, floor, along with everyone's
favorite, the trampoline.
Due to the popular demand, the recreation
committee offered an expanded power
skating program this month which helps
train and condition 'hockey players and
figure skaters.
For people who don't like to sweat during
all of their recreation activities, the Clinton
Recreation Committee also offers crafts.
The first bread dough art course was so
successful, it has been decided to offer the
public Bread Dough Art II.
It is hoped that calligraphy and cake
decorating will be part of the upcoming
adult craft programs.
The children are not to be left out of the
craft courses as workshops featuring
painting, calligraphy and handicrafts hope
to be offered in the near future.
And of course, the Clinton Recreation
Committee always offers special programs
during school breaks, and the March break
( March 9 - 17) is no exception. A road hockey
tournament, shinny hockey, public skating
and film festivals are only a few of the
highlights planned for the week.
If none of these activities appeal to you,
-don't forget about swimming or weight
lifting at the Vanastra Recreation Centre.
So next time you feel like doing
something, take a look in the Clinton Winter
Recreation Guide, pick out your favorite
activity then go and participate.

Hanover 8, Clinton 1
Hanover maintained its dominance over
Clinton by winning the last meeting between
in the regular season, 8-1.
The first period broke the Mustangs as the
Barons potted three goals.
Goals from Robert Stone from Tim Davis
and 'Robin Farro, Bob Sullivan from Steve
Rae and Chris Ahrens, and Richard
Graham from Jeff Speer set the tone for the
rest of the game.
Clinton limited the home team to only one
goal by Steve Rae, assisted by Paul Nixon in
the second frame but failed to score to make
ground on the league leading Barons.
Robert Stone scored again in the third
with linemates Tim Davis and Robin Farro
again assisting.
Paul Nixon picked up the sixth Hanover
goal, assisted by Bruce McLaughlin and
Steve Rae. Goalie Gary Peart and Gary
Rouw assisted on Chris Ahrens' goal, mak-
ing it a 7-0 game.
Clinton got on the board on an unassisted
Dan Wilson effort.
Hanover closed out scoring on a goal by
Richard Graham. Willy Torry and Jeff
Speer got the final assists of the evening.
Manager Wayne Wiggins has not been
able to pinpoint the problem with the
Mustangs. He suggested that the team may
not have the spirit it needs to win.
"I think we have the best line in the league
with Brad Armstrong and Tom Smith..I still
think we're the second best team in the
league but we have so many highs and lows.
"We're getting opportunities but we don'
seem to be able to finish them off."
The team looked at a couple of prospects
for the defensive corp during practice on
Jan. 29. They presently have three
defencemen.
"We have a couple of forwards playing
back but they're better forwards than
defencemen."
The Mustangs are facing Walkerton in an
important game at the Clinton Arena Feb. 1
at 8:30 p.m. Clinton has to get on a winning
track during the last three games of the
season to ensure a spot in the playoffs. '

Clinton Atomsstreak ends at ten games
On Jan. 26 the Clinton ;Atoms downed
Mitchell 5-1 to sweep all four season games
against them in hockey action. The two
teams were scoreless for two periods,,but on
the third, ' Clinton prevailed as they
outscored their opponents 5-1.
Shawn Chipchase and Jason carter paced
Clinton with two goals each. Jeff Riley had
the single. Bud Dixon scored the lone
Mitchell goal as he spoiled Robbie Marriage
and Derek Hoggarth's shutout with only five
minutes remaining.
In the third period the Clinton squad
wasted little time as Jason Carter took a
lead pass from Shawn Chipchase from the'
face-off and scored with eight seconds gone
in the period. Thirteen seconds later Shawn
Chipchase scored an unassisted goal to give
• Clinton a 2-0 lead. At 8:33 Chipchase took a
pass at the Clinton blueline from Scott
Rathwell and broke in all alone to deke the
goalie for his second goal of the game.'
Clinton goalie, Robbie Marriage also earned
an assist on the goal. Jt was Marriage's,
second assist this season.
After Mitchell had cut the Clinton lead to
3-1, Jeff Riley scored on a goal -mouth
scramble.. Gerri Cappelli and Scott Jewitt
received assists on the goal. Jason Carter's
second goal of the game, on a beautiful
backhand, closed out the ,scoring. Darrell
Levis assisted on the play.
Goderich Atom A's came to town on Jan.
21 to take on the Clinton Atoms who were
riding a 10 game winning streak. When the
final buzzer sounded Goderich had defeated
Clinton 4-2 on the strength of two goals in the
last three minutes. The final goal was
scored when, coach Bob Livermore had
pulled his goalie for an extra attacker, but it
backfired as it resulted in the insurance goal
Goderich needed.
Goderich broke on top first as Jason
Jeffrey scored the first two goals to give the
visitors a 2 -0 -lead. But before the period had
' ended, Clinton's hard-working Scott Jewitt
pulled Clinton to within one goal at 2-1. The
second period ,was scoreless as both teams
missed good scoring opportunities. '
In the third, Clinton came out pressing
and forechecking well and it paid off when
Jason Carter intercepted a pass at the
blueline, skated in and scored on a deke on
the goalie to knot the score at 2-2.
With just under three minutes left, Tom
Hosack scored the winning goal as his shot
seem to handcuff Clinton goalie Robbie
Marriage. With only 11 seconds left and the
Clinton goal. empty, Paul Wheelerput the
game out of Clinton's reach.
Clinton's next start is this Feb. 2 at 3:15
p.m: then they host Elam Logan. On Feb.,
