The Farm,
a special- book
A lasting Bicentennial photographic
tribute to Ontario's farms, farmlands and
the people who worked them was launched
in the form of a book titled The Farm.
The book contains 128 pages displaying
140 photographs depicting Ontario's rural
landscapes, farms and farmers dating both
in contemporary times and at the turn of the
century.
The older photos, 76 black -and -white
reproductions, are by noted Ontario
photographer Reuben Sallows, who travell-
ed theprovince in the late 1800s and early
1900s capturing his love of farm life using
only the equipment available in 'his day and
his imagination and talent.
A collection of his best work was donated
by his family some years ago to the Ontario
Ministry of Agriculture and Food. Seeking a
suitable use for Sallows' photos; the idea for
the book was conceived by the ministry's
bicentennial committee.
To portray farming today, the ministry
commissioned Toronto photographer John
de Visser. His 64 fbur-color photographs
both contrast and complement the haunting
black -and -white Sallow photographs.
The text accompanying the article is by
author Jock Carroll of Toronto, whose books
include The Shy Photographer (his first)
and his latest, biography of humorist and
journalist Greg Clark.
Assisting the ministry in producing the
book is Methuen Publishing Ltd. of Toronto.
Majdr sponsors are Ciba-Geigy Canada
Ltd., Funk Seeds, H.J. Heinz Co. of Canada
Ltd. and the Ontario Federation of
Agriculture. Co-sponsors are Campbell
Soup Co. Ltd. and John Labatt Ltd.
The Farm is available at major
bookstores across Canada and sells for
$29.95.
Coping
with emergency
Do you know what to do in an emergency?
The Industrial Accident Prevention
Association urges everyone to be prepared
for prompt action in case of an accident. So
be sure you know how to" cope in an
emergency. If you're planning for help,.
these are four points to remember:
• Tell where it happened. Give street
number and name of street. Repeat it.
• Tell what has happened. Is your house on
fire? Has your furnace exploded? Has so-
meone had a heart attack?
• Tell what kind of help is needed. It won't
hurt if you explain what kind of equipment
you think will be needed.
• Tell who you are. This is important,
especially if a multi -family dwelling is in:.
volved. •
