From that stands
By Anne M irejko
Itis snow fun
My fondness for snow isn't what it use to
be. Just a couple off years ago I would sit in
the house and wish that the snow would keep
falling until it was up to at least My knees. I
still enj y a good snow storm, but only on
my week e8ld
For the most port, I now find snow a has-
sle. Instead of just throwing on a coat and
walking out the door, you have to find a
scarf, two gloves, and if you wear hiking
boots, it takes a good three minutes to lace
them up properly.
The next step is what I've decided has
turned me off'snow, and that's scraping the
ice off the car windows and letting it warm
up.
I've come to this conclusion because I
didn't mind snow up until a few years ago.
And at that time, my dad would clear off the
car, having it all warmed up and ready to go
when I was. Now that dad's not around to do
it, my enthusiasm for the white stuff just
isn't t1)e same.
HoW6ver, there are still a few ,winter ac-
tivities that keep me hoping for lots of snow,
and although I don't like scraping windows,
I do enjoy shovelling snoW,

Chevalier says that it raises the heart rate
and blood pressure to higher levels than
most exercises that use the same amount of
energy. This increases the risk of heart at-
tack for people who have a history of heart
problems, are unfit, over weight or have
hypertension.
People with hypertension, or high blood
pressure, are the highest risk hs many of
them do not know of their condition.
For those who are not in shape, or simply
don't know the proper techniques for snow
shovelling, the other risk is back injury.
Mr. Chevalier has made a.list of seven tips
that will help make snow shovelling safe.
-Warm up before you start. Loosen your up-
per body with arm and shoulder rolls and
some gentle bending at the waist.
-Bend your knees and legs, keeping your
back straight and letting your legs do most
of the work.
-Don't hurry. Pace yourself at. about 10-12
shovels full per minute. Better still, take
your heart rate to make sure you're working
at the right intensity for fitness building.
-Avoid big shovel's full, particularly if the
snow is wet and heavy. Use a shovel with a
small scoop. The large push shovels hold up •
to five times more snow than normal
shovels.
-Put your hand near the scoop of the shovel
to lift more efficiently.
-When lifting or pushing the snow, exhale.
-Stop at the first sign )f breathlessness or
dizziness. There are goad snow blowers on
the market, and a lot of other ways to get in
shape.
For a person who is fit and healthy, snow
shovelling could make your upper legs and
arms stronger. If done continuously for
about 15 minutes, shovelling ,could become
an aerobic workout.
