Lions help less fortunate
By Doris Hunter -
The Lions Club motto is "We serve" and
the International President Bert Mason has
issued a challenge to all members, "Answer
the Call to Serve". Our local Lions certainly
do that and one of their endeavours is to col-
lect used glasses, eye glasses that is and
hearing aids to be sent to those in need in
other countries.
Now is the time to houseclean your
drawers and cupboards, where you may
find such things. Any Lion will accept them
but Joe Brandon has a box for them and

Ritz deck still under -debate
By James Friel
Bayfield businessman Roger Pemberton

with the unauthorized deck he built onto the
New Ritz Hotel. MVlr. Pemberton was accom-
panied by his lawyer Fausto Boniferro at
the Jan. 7 council meeting.

The businessman had formerly said the
letter would;lbe forthcoming from unit direc-
tor Ed Harrison. Mr. Harrison told council a
letter of approval would not be issued until
Mr. Pemberton demonstrated he could ad-
minister the holding tanks in the manner he
proposed.
'Although Mr. Pemberton had the in-
spector's letter, council judged it did not
answer concerns held by Mr. Harrison.
At the Jan. 7 meeting, Mr. Pemberton ad-
dressed another of council's concerns. ,
Council said it was not policy to allow en-
croachments onto municipal land for com-
mercial gain: Mr. Pemberton said the por-
tion of the deck presently an encroachment
onto village land would be left clear for use
as a fire exit.
A decision on the deck was again deferred
until the next meeting while council waits
for a letter of approval from Mr. Harrison,
expected Within a few days at the municipal
office.
