Clinton News-Record, 1985-1-9, Page 17• Sports CLINTON NEWS -RECORD, WEDNFSDAX, dt WRY 9,1985—Page 17 t Naturally Speaking By Steve Cook Fishing tips 'from Jonesy Winter has finally arrived and will no doubt put the final touch to the off season blahs for fishermen. Nothing is more discouraging to the avid angler, than the realization that it will be several months before he can limber up the old arm and try to tie into a big one again. There is a form of salvation available, however, and it comes disguised as a book by Robert H. Jones. Bob Jones is Elrobably Canada's best known fisherman. est articles and escapades are recognized in this part of the country by his contributions to Ontario Out of Doors, but his byline has appeared in many publications throughout Canada and the U.S. as well as exotic areas such as Japan. Jonesy (as he is known by all) is also a man of many talents, and is not shy about sharing his ideas and discoveries with fellow fishermen. So what does all this have to do with a fisherman who just sits on his thumbs all winter? Well, the book I'm talking about is just the first in a series which deal with making your own fishing tackle and describes how to make your own lures. Homemade lures are very effective for catching fish, and compared to the commer- cial product are very inexpensive. The big- gest advantage, however, is that your own lures can be tailored to suit local conditions and needs and, as you begin to understand how they function, you can experiment until you achieve the desired effect. Who knows, you could even come up with a "wham banger" that catches fish every time and could even make you very rich. Sound im- possible? Just remember that the world renowned Rapalla was first carved out by hand and all of today's big sellers had to start out somewhere. In Vol. 1 - Lures, Jonesy describes just what tools are required and how to use -them properly and safely. Most of. the tools re - Atoms extend CLINTON - The Clinton Atoms extended their first place lead to eight points over se- cond place Elma-Logan as they defeated Seaforth 5 - 3 on Sunday afternoon. Seaforth scored first as ' Danny Dalton beat Clinton goalie Derek Hoggarth at the 2:10 mark of the first period. Clinton's Jason Carter, who played an extremely good game, tied it at 1 - 1 when Shawn Chip- chase'.s pass put Carter in the clear for the goal. Just before the period ended Danny Wildfong was set up beautifully in the slot by Scott Rathwell and Danny made no mistake as his wrist shot hit the bottom right hand corner. Clinton's Mark Livermore scored the o►rly goal of the second period as he gathered in Danny Wildfong's rebound shot to score. Seaforth narrowed the score to 3 - 2 early in the third period as, Jason Beutenmiller scored unassisted. At 6:13 Jason Carter's se- cond goal of the -game restored°a two goal advantage for Clinton as he scored on a high backhander after taking a drop pass from Darrell Lavis. Mark Livermore, Clinton's small shifty centreman scored his second goal as he deked the goalie after taking a nice two way pass from Danny Wildfong and • Runner -of) champs at Exeter tourney On Decembe27 at the first annual Petro- Canada etraCanada Atom Tournament held at Exeter, the Clinton Atoms gathered the Runners-up position. Earlier on in the day Clinton had Ai defeated Strathroy 2-1 and Exeter 4-1 to Mr reach the championship game, In the championship game Clinton's Shawn Chipchase opened up the scoring to give Clinton a 1-0 lead. But after that it was all Blenheim as they completely outclassed the tired, bewildered Clinton boys. In the first game against Strathroy the Clinton Atoms rallied from a 1-0 Strathroy lead to score two unanswered goals in the second period and defeated their southerrn, opponents of the Shamrock League. Scott. Jewitt's unassisted goal tied the score at 1-1 and Danny Wildfong's goal, assisted by Scott Jewitt gave Clinton the victory. In the second game against Exeter, the teams battled even until the second period when Scott Jewitt opened up the scoring at 2:47 after •taking a nice pass from Darrell Lavis. At 7:49 Jason Carter skated the en- tire ice after taking a pass from.Scett Jewitt beside the Clinton goal to score and give Clinton a 2-0 advantage. In the third period with Clinton trying to protect a two goal lead, Exeter's Joel Smith intercepted an errant 'Clinton pass and fired by Ro ie Marriage to cut Clinton's lead tb 2-1. Clifton's Shawn Chipchase restored the two goal lead as he scored a breakaway goal. Jason Carter's lead pass led to Chip - chase's breakaway. Finally, another goal by Shawn Chipchase on a rebound closed out the scoring. Scott Rathwell had originally taken the shot when Chipchase stuffed home the rebound. For finishing runners-up each Clinton player received a trophy. As well, Shawn Chipchase was chosen as Clinton's most valuable player in the championship game against Blenheim. Shawn received a hockey stick for his fine efforts. Atoms Post Shutout On Saturday, Dec. 29 the Clinton Atoms travelled to Mitchell to take on the Mitchell Atom Hawks. Clinton's goalies Derek Hog- garth and Robllie Marriage turried aside 10 shots to earn their fourth shutout of the ',season as Clinton earned a 5-0 win. Shawn Chipchase led the Atom attack with a hat trick. Mark Livermore and Jason Carter added singles. Scott Jewitt added two assists while Darrell •1 avis and Scott Rathwell added one asciat each. Once you have the equipment need- ed, you're ready to start., and Bob describes the best way to find the materials and com- ponents needed to manufacture your favorite style of lure. He then takes you step by step through the stages of making spoons, spinners, wooden plugs, and spinner baits. Bob goes on even further to explain lead head jigs and moulds for jigs and sinkers. There.is some excellent advice about work - nig .with molten lead in a chapter by itself, and is certainly a must to read and understand before any experimenting with this product is done. The book ends up by discussing the final touches which are put to your pride and joy that mare them killers in the water. Vol. 1- Lures is very well done with lots of pictures and diagrams to help explain the fine points. The text is done in Jonesy's easy style, which makes interesting reading. Technical information is there, but in an easy to understand format, not lists of tables . and graphs. I can't think of a better way for a frustrated fisherman to spend a winter evening, than by reading this book. And, I can almost guarantee that if you are any kind of an angler at all, it won't be long before the pocket knife is out and you're try- ing your hand at your first wooden plug. And once you start, you'll be hooked, so to speak.
