Enjoy. e le dis airering.... excellent lyric
on albums by gametic recording ..rdsts
By Janet Tench
As Christmas draws to a close, our ears b.
ecome more finely tuned. We listen
especially to children (what do they want
for Christmas), but we also listen to carols.
Thus, now is a good time to look at Big
Country's Steeltown and Rickie Lee Jones'
The Magazine. Why? Because both of these
albums have excellent lyrics.
Township
is calling
all quitters
TUCKERSMITH TWP. - In celebration of
Tuckersmith Township's 150th birthday, a
special Sesquicentennial Quilt will be
chosen.
All present and former township residents
wishing to enter the Tuckersmith Ses-
quicentennial Quilt Contest are asked to
give notice of their intent by December 31.
Quilts are to be double bed size, and depict
the township's heritage. Entry forms may
be picked up at The Birch Tree or The Spinn-
ing Wheel in Hensall, Mary's Sewing Centre
in Clinton and the Seaforth Sewing Centre
and at The Polka Dot in Exeter. Quilters can
also call Dorothy Williams, RR 4 Clinton, at
482-3326.
Tickets for the quilt raffle can be obtained
at the above outlets. They are $1. each, or
three for $2. The prize winning quilt will be
rewarded $500 and becomes the property of
the quilt committee. It will be raffled on
June 29. The second prize will be $100 and
the third, $75.
Goderich Township
has first 1 5 - 0 event
The council members of Goderich
Township will host the first sesquicentennial
event by holding a ,levee Wednesday,
January 1 from 2 to .5 p.m. Everyone is in-
vited to attend the informal reception at the
Goderich Township Community Centre in
Holmesville. •
Those attending should be aware, that
period costume is acceptable. Music will be
provided for everyone's enjoyment.
Eight farms have stayed in the same
family name for 150 years. Township ses-
quicentennial signs recognizing this fact
will be presented to the present owners at .3
p.m. The roots of some' of the pioneers cer-
tainly took hold!
Winners of the two Township Trivia Con-
, tests will rAggiveiheiir,,pp'i,es of the book, "A
History of Goderich Township" also that
day.'
Men who wish, to register for the beard
growing contest are able to sign up during
the afternoon.
Many inquiries have been made about
who might purchase the history book of
Goderich Township. The book committee
wished to clarify that anyone, whether a
resident of the township or not, can buy a
book. They will be availableat the levee.
The 'levee provides the opportunity to
reminisce with local people, talk of the
weather or converse with the municipal
council members. People are asked to start
Goderich Township's 1 - 5 - 0 celebrations
with their enthusiastic attendance at its
levee. : .
. Let's loop first at the poetic Big Country.
With this new effort the hist/Scottish band
is much improved. While 1983's The Cross-
ing held stunning lyrics. aod" good in-
strumentations, the vocals were indiscer-
nable. Now their music is more fitting and
their vocals are more 'lucid. (But poor
Stuart Adamson and Tony Butler - their
vocals still need work).
Most important of all, ;their lyrics have
maintained their excellence. A solid exam-
ple of this is found in "Just a Shadow":
"Still the promise comes of living for all/If
we only get our back against the wall/I look
at backs that pushed the wall for
years/Scarred by many knives and too
much fear."
Rather than spoil all the fun of discover-
ing the other lyrics for you, I will simply in-
sist that you purchase Steeltown. Rating: 8.
More mystical, perhaps, than Big Country
is Rickie Lee Jones (of "Chuck E's in Love"
fame). Her magazine is an album of moods;
hurt, love and intrigue. Throughout, Jones'
vocals dominate - one minute sharp, the
next one pouting and whispery. One song
stands out here, audibly. "If Must Be Love"
has outstanding quality as a song; it con-
tains both the rhythmic beat and vocals that
Jones is known for.
Lyricall, Jones has always been con-
sidered bizarre: Her lyrics jump from one
topic to another with reckless abandon, yet
every word fits into place. The most unusual

piece on the Magazine is, naturally, the title
track. Picture if you can "Homeboys/call-
ing fronn the corners/station to station/for
the magazine/but herr pages are turning/out
the lights in the windows/and all that you're
reading/is the braille night:" Rating: 8.
Both of these albums make great gifts
(late Christmas or otherwise) for mature
listeners. Happy New Year!
