Thanks for your kindness and loyalty, and for making our first year at the Albion an enjoyable one. 21C ALbiun 'iutel Your Hosts Ed and Wanda Fogarty MAIN STREET BAYFIELD 565-2641 le Remembering Christmas past By Doris Mater Christmas memories are what our editor Shelley McPhee called for this week and many of our good friends took the time to write theirs down or tell me themselves of other years in other places. Talking with Edith and Morgan Smith, I heard of their departure from Australia in 1951. It was the custom there for people to cook their festive meal on Christmas Eve and they have it picnic style on the beach the big day. The Smiths actually were on board ship that year, headed for England from where the Brigadier was to make a tour of the medical centres of the European Stations and the British medical corps. The Orion was a pretty luxurious ship with swimming pools for both first and second class passengers. Santa Claus appeared at the farewell fancy dress party in a wine coloured bath robe, but dinner was traditional except for the cranberries, which were missing. The Holly berries were pink not red. The menu would surely have satisfied Henry VIII with its eight courses. • Young Gerald Smith aged 10, had more fun than anybody, even being allowed to Hold the wheel as they sailed right around the isle of Capri. But the big thrill for hire was going into the bar, out of hours ,of course, to see what that out of bounds for minors was like. There were slot machines, and pulling the lever, he and his pal got two quarters. Back went the money into play and imagine two small boys and a jampacked jackpot. Merry Christmas indeed. She flew from Toronto with her daughter Ethel, to New York where Brenda, her youngest child, was a nurse and the three of them drove to Boston where Helen and Colonel Dave Battye were holding the family party. Jessie was struck by the willow trees en route which were sprayed with silver, creating a very sparkling effect. They were staying in a suburb of Boston, Westford and the Garden Club of town had organized a Mex- ican Styled pilgrimage to the town creche. Each home had flattened the snow banks by the road, to place brown paper bags, with the top edges folded out and down in which a good layer of sand supported a long burning lighted candle, luminaires they are called. The effect was quite magical., as people joined each other in the street singing carols and merging with those from other blocks to proceed to the manger, a lovely lovely experience. My husband and I spent one Christmas in England with our family as both sons-in-law were there that year. The church bells were a delight peeling forth for the midnight service. and yes the turkeys hang in the butcher's windows, just as Scrooge said, but not the great birds we buy here. Just as well, since the small oven in the curate's abode could never have held such a fowl. As it was we had to wrap the bird well in aluminum foil and squeeze the creature into the oven as best we could. There was super, super curnberland sauce for the pudding, and callers from the church all day long with More gifts of sweets for our grandchildren. One of our family traditions, was a huge pinata in the shape of a bird. I had to take 91,E P,SE OWE: %no The Bay{1Q ,r10 be CLOSED 110 OW. One small boy came up to see the bird patted him and then gave it a kiss. The steward said it could go first class if it didn't require food. It ended its days at a Christmas party the church held each year for the church boys' club and the Deaconess told them it had flown across the Atlantic just for them. Really music was the most exciting part of the season. We went to Chester to hear a great massed choir from all the area. We were dashed to find that tickets were needed and no more available. Handicapped people are too proud to ask for special treatment, but I couldn't bear to have my blind husband miss that concert. Screwing up my courage, I waved his white cane at an official and said, we have come from Canada for this concert, is there no way we could attend. He disappeared but when he returned he had a warm grin on his face as he said, "Come this way, you may sit on the wall." My husband thought it was wonderful, for the cry used to be, "The weakest to the wall," in troubled times. Exquisite is the only word for the music that night. + + + The whole community is saddened to hear of Marion Murray's continued illness: She had to return to hospital after a short stay at home and has since been taken to London.
