More photographic equipment is sold at
Christmas time than in any other part of the
year, according to photo industry sources.
Most of it is for gift -giving.
Here are some pointers from the experts
if you are shopping for a camera as a gift.
•How serious about photography is the
person you are gifting? If he or she sends
serious signals, consider one of the several
35 millimeter single lens reflex cameras on
the market. An SLR such as the AE -1 Pro-
gram is a camera the beginner can grow
with. Start simple. Add lenses and ac-
cessories for more sophisticated photos.
On the other hand, if you are getting a
camera for a now -and -then snapshooter who
only wants to record special occasions such
as vacations and Christmas parties, check
out an easy-to-use pocket camera like the
new Snappy from Canon.
.How important are the results? There's a
simple rule in photography: Other things
being equal, the bigger the negative, the bet-
ter the resulting print. Thirty-five
millimeter is the largest size available in
popular cameras. In a camera such as the
new Canon Snappy, 35 millimeter film will
produce sharp, clear prints 8 x 10 inches and
larger. That's difficult to do with smaller
size film.
•Easte-of-operation. If you give someone
a camera that's difficult to use, they're
more likely •to be frustrated than pleased.
Features to Look for are automatic film
loading, advance and rewind and a wide
range of shutter speeds which will make pic-
tures possible under most lighting condi-
tions.
•Kinds of subjects. Ifyour photo fan is
likely to be interested in action photography
such as sports, make sure the camera you
select has the ability to stop action. That
means a fast shutter speed —1/1000th of a
second in the SLR or 1/500th capability in a
pocket camera.
•Manufacturer's reputation. This counts
no matter what you are buying at any time
of the year. When it comes to cameras,
check on the status of the manufacturer

with professional photographers. If the
maker of thecamera you are considering is
heavily involved with a major sports activi-
ty such as the Olympics or the Super Bowl,
you can bet they are serious about the equip-
ment they make for professionals and this
will be reflected in what they produce for
amateurs.
